I just fired up my old ipad 1 to check for you and yes TZ does work on ipad 1 ios 5.1.1. If you can though do yourself a favour and pick up an ipad 4. There is no comparison.

This is incorrect. Early production TZs were 'white clock & green lock'. I own one.
