It's best that you find out about Tempest chronologically. If you can find an actual Tempest arcade machine by Atari at a convention or retro arcade or something, by all means play it. Don't just play it once. Learn it. Absorb it. Get a feel of the weighted spin controller and fall into a zen state as you play. Then, you are allowed to play Tempest 2000. You will appreciate just what Jeff Minter did in turning a fantastic arcade game into a wholly different experience with familiar rules. It is the perfect sequel that does not diminish the original yet is an enhancement of the original at the same time. Yeah, I have an arcade Tempest in my home, so I'm a little into it yes.
