Update 1:33 PM: The Loop's Jim Dalrymple has quashed the rumor, responding to Pocketgamer's report with a simple "Nope".

Dalrymple has solid connections at Apple and has on numerous occasions and with 100% accuracy either confirmed or denied specific rumors. Prior to today, his most recent such statement came last month when he nixed a claim of a television-related Apple media event scheduled Apple for this month.

I doubt Apple will release a game pad (to be honest, Apple makes great keyboards, but lousy mice. They do however make excellent trackpads).

What MIGHT happen though is a universal gamepad API to come in iOS 7 - so accessory makers (who are very important - Apple risks lawsuits if they shut out accessority makers) can come up with their own ways of making controllers, app developers have a standard way of interfacing with the accessories (so they're not tied to having to support dozens manually), and it all just works, almost interchangeably. (You'll still have arguments of analog vs. digital, shoulder buttons etc).

So whether you use an iCade, or something that plugs into the bottom or via Bluetooth (which can include Xbox and PS3 controllers), it'll work with games already there. Maybe even keyboard/mouse for those iOS FPS games.
