It used to be that touching anywhere on the screen could be used to launch the ball. As you've noticed, they've now limited the launching to the launch buttons on machines that have launch buttons. This is not necessarily a bad thing. From what I gather on your post, you haven't moved the launch button down to a more convenient location. Try this...Choose a table > table menu > options > button position.
