He does specifically mention the iPad though.

He mentions that it is available on nearly every platform in existence and then stated his preference for the iPad due to the ability to change perspective, and even though he is a Gaming "Journalist" the term iPad tends to be used as shorthand for Tablet; just like Kleenex is for tissue, or Google is for Search Engine etc.

I daresay there's a major difference between "Tablet" and "iPad" in this context. With an iPad you know you're getting a device that will run TPA like it was designed to run on iOS devices.
Android devices, on the other hand, is a mixed up bunch of different sizes, setups and specs. For example, TPA runs awful, basically unplayable, on my Android phone, which is brand new and definitely in the high-end side of things.

As a gaming "journalist", he's better off recommending a specific platform than a "one of these probably works" thing.

Yawn, as a gaming "Journalist" he's barely a journalist, and as such did make a recommendation. Did you not hear it? It was The Pinball Arcade. You may not like his preferred way of playing it, meh; such is life.

Your experience with Android is not remarkable, it sounds like other peoples experience with iOS, especially with iOS6 and iPhone 5's.

Jeff also gave props to TPA during their day five GOTY 'bombcast'. He specifically praised the iOS version primarily due to the unfortunate content release issues with most of the other platforms.
