I've played on a few Metallica machines but never scored well (best I've done is 15 million) as I never knew what the rules were and just shot at anything with a flashing light. Now I know what you're supposed to do, so hopfully I'll perform better next time. Definitely, this is one of those machines where it's not obvious what you're supposed to do, yet doing it properly is very important.
Glad to finally see one with the new code update. Shame none of the machines I can get to have the freaking new code installed. Stupid sloppy lazy operators!
Or, of course, the operators are unaware there's an update (which i suspect is the most likely reason--most Star Trek Stern machines I've found have not been updated since the machine was released, and I'm sure this is why), or they don't know how to install an update.
Nah, I'm guessing laziness (or don't care). Or are still of the mindset that upgrades are like earlier modern Sterns/all other machines where a ROM was needed and not just a USB stick. Damn shame and frustrating as hell... I find it hard to believe operators could be that daft.
Oh, they can be. You'd be surprised how computer-illiterate Average Joe can be. Ask any tech support person. That, and no one ever reads the manual for these things. This is especially the case if the operator is not a dedicated pinball person but just someone on the premises, as is the case with most bars that have a machine or two around: They'll buy the machine (likely on impulse), boot it up, tell it the price per credit, and stand back. You can see it in the numerous machines in public that are thoroughly neglected and abused: They don't know how to fix it either, and they didn't take into account that pinball machines will break down.
Yet another explanation is that the amount of activity gained from keeping the machine updated is minimal. Hardly anyone who walks up to a Metallica pinball machine would know anything about it besides to not let the ball drain, let alone know the differences between the rules whenever they're updated.
Either way, most people don't know that pinball can be updated. There are none of those messages that pop up for the operator telling them that their machines are obsolete and must be updated the way computers, smartphones, and video games do.
Always a big treat to watch the Bowen tutorials. There is still a few things he hardly touched upon. Like getting all the heads in sparky multiball, the new super jackpot in graveyard multiball, the rules in snake multiball and coffin. Seek and destroy, enter sandman and sparky CIU, even more super skill shot rules, stacking of mystery awards, end of the line wizard mode, etc.
Metallica is really starting to be fantastic machine. Love it much more than the new ST Stern at the moment.
We still have another big update with more speech and 4 band mods coming our way soon (some people even think there will be yet another couple of songs for the band mode, but not sure about that since there is already 14 full songs)
Oh yeah, Metallica is a great game especially with the new code. There's a Pro on location near me that the operator updated right when the new code was released. This tutorial was great for me in two ways.. first understanding some of the finer points of stacking shot multipliers during multiball and second seeing that one of the best in the world can choke on the CIU modes as bad as I do lol. I guess I also need to adjust from my old code strategy and not pay so much attention to reaching SND mode anymore since Bowen paid it no attention whatsoever.
I think I'm going to end up buying a NIB Premium sometime in the next year or so.. I love Metallica that much!
