I've set up a #PinballArcadeFans IRC room on freenode.net. This was initially at the request of a few users over in the Android thread, however it's open to any PAF user, on any platform. The more the merrier! I'm OPS (fancy word for channel moderator) in the room, and I'm on during Brisbane, Australia hours. How to Join In the Fun (basic steps)

Go to http://webchat.freenode.net/
Type #PinballArcadeFans into the channel field.
Set your IRC Nick (the name you want to represent yourself with - using your forum user name is a great start)
Start chatting!
Great, but what now? http://freenode.net/faq.shtml is a great start to working out how to use IRC if you are new to it. Take the time to read this web page. Particularly the bit about how to get IRC user's attention in the chat room (type the full IRC nick of the user you want to get the attention of, and the user's IRC client will flash to let them know you are talking to them) Registering Your Nickname (basically, it's your username on all freenode IRC servers) Your IRC Nick performs the same function as your user account here on Pinball Arcade Fans: it uniquely identifies you and gives you a consistent "presence" on the IRC rooms you visit. These instructions are paraphrased from http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#registering. Don't be daunted by the steps: follow them and you'll be registered in no time. :D

Go to http://webchat.freenode.net/
Type #PinballArcadeFans into the channel field.
Set your IRC Nick (the name you want to represent yourself with - using your forum user name is a great start)
In the IRC client message window, type /msg NickServ REGISTER [password] [user@example.com] (where [password] is a unique password only you know, and [user@example.com] is the email address you want to link to your IRC nick.
If you get a message that the user name is already registered, use the /nick [username] command to change to another user name and repeat Step 4.
Open your email account, and look for an email sent from freenode with a verification command.
Copy and paste the verification command into the IRC message window, and press ENTER.
You have now successfully registered your IRC user name. Ensure you log in regularly to ensure the account doesn't become inactive.
Using an IRC Client (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android) Once you've got a taste of the shenanigans using the web chat service, you will probably want to experiment with a proper IRC client. You've already registered your IRC nick, so you can configure your IRC client to automatically join the chat room *and* automatically verify your IRC nick as "genuinely you". Android I've found AndroIRC to be really good. It has freenode.net support baked-in. It is free, but if you find you like it, there is a paid version. The paid version is used to keep the IRC servers up, so it's worth supporting if you can. RUBICN64 has found that Android IRC on Amazon is a great client as well. This app is also in Google Play as a paid app. iOS Colloquy works quite well (also has a Mac version). Windows/Mac/Linux I can recommend Pidgin. I use this daily at work, and it handles gTalk, IRC, MSN, pretty much everything. I'm running fedora OS. Found an IRC client that you love? Ping me and I'll add it here so others can benefit.
