(Personally, I didn't think much of MGRR. Just more of the same, with ordinary graphics and even more Kojima pretension. It seems more cutscene than actual game, just like MGS.) Anywaaay... it's a bit unfair to compare shooters/action games with pinball. Pinball does a different set of things, and requires much (all?) of its assets to be in memory and visible at any one time. You can't just LOD away transparent ramps, or reduce the accuracy of the physics when the frame rate dips. And it has to run at 60fps, all the time. It can't do a Farcry 3 and dip down to 15fps, tearing the screen like crazy, every time an explosion goes off. However, you do have some good points. 1) The biggest problem seems to relate to Farsight's decision to go with 1080p on console. Just my opinion, but I believe this was a bad mistake. Apparently it was due to a "management" decision, and maybe "1080p" looks good on a checklist somewhere. However, the real world effect of this is that the tables don't look particularly good. In order to get 1080p at 60fps, there have been cutbacks in terms of lighting, texturing, shading and polygon count. There's no glass reflection. And on the smaller devices, we see that shadows are missing entirely. And so the balls appear to float on the table. In short: TPA looks a bit... basic. Compare and contrast to Zen's products on console: these run at 720p x 60fps. And despite the lower resolution, they look a lot better. There is a much higher polygon density, there are very few low resolution textures to be found, and the lighting is generally well done. More than that, though... Zen -- despite what people may think of the physics settings or gameplay choices -- obviously put a hell of a lot of polish in to what they do. Which brings me to... 2) The other big problem: art and design. IMO, Farsight needs the help of a professional designer or team. This help is required across the entire product line, across every product. Professional design and artistic help is needed with the lighting choices, the background environments, the UI, the logo, the icon, the cabinet textures, you name it. It's the main area where this product is severely lacking. The polish just isn't there, even if the intention is. Much of the art looks like "programmer art".
