Request: star wars data east

The first pinball machines I had regular access to were Data East's Star Wars and Rocky and Bullwinkle. I'd love to see Star Wars, but it almost certainly will never happen. People complain a lot about how much the ramp can be abused for scoring in the original release, and I just don't see much hope of getting the license. I still have a lot of fun playing it on VP though. I'd be thrilled if this ever made it to the Pinball Arcade if just for the nostalgia rush.

If they could find a way to get the license, they would probably do it in a heartbeat. Same goes for Indiana Jones.

If they do ever get the license (which is highly doubtful, even with a Kickstarter, given it's now being used by Zen), I hope it's with the latest ROM update, which greatly improves the game--it was a one-shot game before, like Bride of Pinbot.

Used to be that all you had to do was shoot the center ramp ad-nauseum. Eventually it could be worth 99,000,000 points per shot. Stern's update fixes that, among others.

Plus, since it's an OFFICIAL ROM update, that means it qualifies for TPA. By contrast, Cirqus Voltaire's home ROM was an UNofficial update, which is why they couldn't use it, despite the reviews it got.

Strange rule, though. I wonder if they have to do that for legal reasons.

The Data East Star Wars isn't the most attractive table, but I did find it a lot of fun and quite amusing. I'd love to see it in The Pinball Arcade, but I don't know if Disney owning the rights would make a license easier or harder to obtain?

I've heard it mentioned Indiana Jones was pretty much impossible to get (partially because it's Disney). I assume the same applies here.

(I imagine Indiana Jones would get a much bigger priority than DE Star Wars personally.)

Well Capcom was able to re-create DuckTales on multiple console platforms, so Disney can't be that hard to talk to. Granted Indiana Jones is a much bigger property, but I suspect the only thing impossible about Disney is proving you'll get a decent enough return to be worth talking to. Farsight might need to run a Kickstarter campaign just to indicate sales numbers in that case.

Every time this is brought up in interviews with FS staff, the answer is always the same - Disney won't even "pick up the 'phone". By that I assume, they try making contact, but all they get is radio silence. No returned calls, no replies to emails, nothing. If you can only get as far as admiring the water cooler in the lobby, you're not going to get anywhere.

Maybe they should try to contact Harrison Ford or his "people" if he likes pinball that could be an inside track to get the ball rolling with disney on Indiana Jones 93' and the DE Star Wars for TPA. Hey I can dream right?:p

Can't say I'm surprised. I expect if Zen didn't already have their deal pre-sale they'd have no hope of getting one either. Given the rights split that pretty well rules this table out at the moment.

It also could be more complicated than just dealing with Disney. From my understanding, EA currently has exclusive rights to publish all digital Star Wars games which may mean any licensing might need to involve them as well. Zen either might have better access with someone in licensing at Disney or they were grandfathered in since they were making Star Wars pinball before the Disney sale.
