Rescue 911 gets a 4 out of me. I'm sorry, but while I love the life-saving theme, this machine just seems even more incomplete than Cactus Canyon. But Cactus Canyon had the excuse of being rushed out the door. Rescue 911 just seems barren...there are even four white spot targets on the right side that do NOTHING but give 3,000 points a hit (which may as well be zero in this game). There's a rumor that those four spot targets were intended to spell out KIRK for a game mode or something, but they had to shelf that idea once Gottlieb couldn't get William Shatner's likeness (he hosted the TV show). The game would've gotten a 3, but "Extra BAWL" made me laugh pretty hard, so I gave it a mercy point. Last Action Hero...wow, I am SO glad they were able to get the rights to this thing! Especially because I LOVE the movie it's based on...and not in a make-fun-of-it way, I mean I really love the movie. I even got it on Blu-Ray once I realized this was the next table. What they did with the CRANE drop targets was nothing short of brilliant--having them all reset upon hitting the switch behind a lowered target (the "Danger Bar") is a tremendously smart move that rewards shot accuracy and punishes random flailing of the flippers. Well done, Kaminkow, Borg and team. This is also the first game I've ever played to have the fabled Smart Missile, which awards every flashing target on the table at the time it's pressed, but not only can it ONLY be used ONCE per game (not once per ball, once per GAME), but there is NO way to get another. It forces you to use it when the time is just right. Another thing about the Smart Missile that makes it even better? Once the ball hits an outlane switch, it deactivates the Smart Missile, so you can't just slam the button as you're draining. This simple design decision FORCES the player to use it WHILE the ball is in play, once more forcing you to think strategically. Data East gets a lot of flack for their very average designs of most of their machines, but wow, they really hit the long ball here...but there are two things with this table that keep it from getting over the fence for a homer. One, the repetitive, seemingly-random callouts. I can't make rhyme or reason of why many of them occur. Frankenstein had the same problem. Thanks, Farsight.
