You're right: some games have issues with goal detection because the Display state it blocked during multiball, as you suggest.
Goal detection is done using other techniques as well (likely not an exhaustive list).

I've got a feeling this might have been implemented posthumously in response to the reported ways users could work around the timer initially in the beta.
Either way, I'm very glad that this reported issue has now been resolved. It's not an accurate test for how well (or poorly) this revenue...

K1 processor could handle this.
However, on most legacy devices, I believe the GPU thread is the bottleneck. This thread actually does the physics and graphics, and not the CPU.
CPU runs the emulation.
It's worth noting that android only got high level of detail (that means more polygons)...
For Android, it's still Froyo...
However, the number of these devices being activated these days is dwindling. It's mostly gingerbread as the lowest common denominator.
