Sometimes the game act weird on locking a ball. I am not sure what is triggering it.
When a ball gets locked the game ejects it, counts down bonus and increases the ball number by one.
There is no new ball at the plunger and you can continue with the ejected ball.
But, when the ball is locked again it will again count as a drain, counts down bonus, increases ball number, or ends game on the last ball.
Pretty annoying bug especially when playing a good game.
