It depends on the table. Some tables have an "extra ball button" (I know Judge Dredd had one), that is designed for these purposes. Some of the operator menus in real pinball machines do give you the option to change the match from "replay" to "extra ball".

Heck, looking at a couple of the tables on The Pinball Arcade. You can clearly see an "extra ball" button on a couple of the tables. They are usually located right below the launcher (rod or button) or right below the start button of the cabinet.
That is the buy-in feature, which if enabled takes place before the match sequence. The match sequence also takes place after initial entry for high scores, so the game is over before the match sequence ever starts.

I played Judge Dredd on PinMame in the past and I changed the match to "Extra Ball" in the OM. It gave me an extra ball and allowed me to continue on when I won the match.

Judge Dredd has some very bizarre behavior going on because of its "Regular Game" / "Super Game" split, so I'm not entirely surprised, but that behavior is not at all typical.

I should note that when I adjusted the setting, the match went off first followed by the buy-in. When it's set to credits, it does the buy in first then the match.

It's possible that other machines with the "extra ball" button does the same.

At least Twilight Zone doesn't, because I own one and it doesn't let you set the match feature to extra ball. But this is interesting nonetheless; I have learned something new today. Thank you.

I like that we have a General Questions thread inside the General Game Discussion sub forum. If you're a fan of HIMYM you may find yourself doing a lot of saluting. "General Questions" *salute*
