How to double your Skins score??

can someone help me out here? I get all the letters then activate the flippers as the intructions say to do but I only got it to activate once. Every other time I just get the CHICKEN message. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

This is the DMD that is displayed when you get Skins:

If you hit the left flipper it should activate the timed skill shot mode to get the reward. If you don't select anything within the time limit or hit the right flipper, it will display the Chicken display.
