My mpg is terrible cos I always drive as fast as the traffic will let me - UK roads technically have a speed limit of 70mph but they're talking about raising to 80 as realistically most roads flow at that speed, and the cameras don't flash til you go over 85.

Luckily the law says the speed cameras have to be warned of in advance and painted bright orange (wtf! I like this law!) so everyone just slows for the camera and then speeds up again. I drove 200 miles today in 3 hours including slow bits with lights at both ends, mostly going 90 or so

I think pretty much everything will be CVT in the not too distant future. I'm a Subaru guy right now but I'm thinking about upgrading to an Audi Quattro for my next car, I'd really like to get back to a manual transmission though.

I'd agree - there is a company not too far from me called Torotrak
http://www.torotrak.com who developed KERS as in the formula 1 kinetic energy recovery system, but their initial development project was IVT's infinitely variable transmissions
http://www.torotrak.com/products-partners/products/main-drive-transmissions/

It's come a long way since the DAF66 http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DAF_66 first production car with variomatic (rubber band CVT)

Sorry Dan, not quite. The cameras can be set to the speed indicated. Normally there is tolerance but not always. Cops usually won't bother under 85 but its their discretion. Quite a few cameras near me are burnt out though so I don't worry.

As far as warnings go, fixed cameras have to have warnings and road markings, mobile speed cameras don't so, there's always a need to be careful, plus, you can be prosecuted for flashing your headlights in an effort to warn oncoming traffic, believe it or not.

Motorway speeds will increase to 80 or maybe higher I reckon but, I also think this move will be tempered with reductions on rural routes where most RTC's occur, together with more 20 mph limits in urban areas.

Shame really, I remember the old days when UK motorists weren't seen as the cash cows they are today

they still make audi quattro's? :p

Of course they do.. I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at? AWD is very important here in CNY where we average nearly ten feet of snow each winter.

Good stuff there. I never know there was a car with a CVT made that long ago.

I'm a walking classic car encyclopedia - I can list the differences between a Triumph TR4 and a TR4A.

You are definitely bang on the money with CVT being the future though.

they still put the quattro badge on it? I know they make AWD just didn't think they put quattro badges still.

Are you thinking of the older 80's road going versions of the rally cars? No they don't make those. A good one will set you back a princely sum though.. The new Audi range features Quattro 4wd systems but not as brutal as the old rally jobs. I guess an RS6 with a v10 Lamborghini engine may be close though, but much more refined

you mean the R8 :p Id twin turbo or Bi-turbo like AUDI says a V8...actually Id twin ROTREX SC it. I was kinda having fun I know they stop putting quattro badges on them since early '90's I like that style reminds me of the scirroco's and as for the JAZZ/Fit Id drop in a K24 with a K20 head. :

No, you're right I don't think they put the actual label on the cars anymore but they do list it on the spec sheet. Its the feature that's important to me, gotta have that nice power distribution in the snow.
