So at our league get together on May 4th, the host had his recently converted Cactus Canyon Continued available for all to play.

Ho-ly crap!

There is sooo much more going on now. The two modes I managed to start were Save Polly from the Bank and Cowboys & Aliens. I have no idea how either started. Save Polly has 3 teller windows on the DMD, and a robber behind each. I believe by shooting the ramps, you shoot at the windows, eventually killing the robbers and saving Polly.

Cowboys & Aliens is essentially Attack From Mars, with one of the saucers appearing on the DMD as well as these skeleton versions of the aliens. You shoot at Bart over and over to score, and it is a multiball scenario. The best part is the music. This crazy thumping electronic music starts and is so unlike the regular music. I saw this mode start various times, and it never ceased to bring a few people over to see what the heck was going on.

There were a bunch of new animations, including an image of Polly after a train has run over her. The match animation was of whiskey bottles getting shot, and there apparently was a mode at the end when more than one player was playing that I think was called Last Call, but I never actually saw it.

You could really sense the game as being complete now. It was not so repetitious with the music or the vocal call-outs, and there were just so many more things going on in terms of modes, and what I saw only cracked the surface. The ColorDMD guys worked their magic on it too, and it looked fantastic. Certain modes would go into a Black & White view, and then switch back to color later.

Such a shame we'll never get to see this in TPA, because it is quite simply better in every way.

Cactus Canyon always bothered me because of how unfinished it feels, but I really WANTED to like it... This mod sounds fantastic.

Man, so jelly. Other than the stuff that rounded out the completeness of it, does the rest feel exactly like the original? Because I know it's running on PROC, so the guy who made it had to rip everything out and script it from scratch (rather than just emulate the original table).

From what I could tell, it felt that way. It was set up for tournament, so certain aspects were different than I'm used to, but overall it felt like nothing wonky was going on. Like I said, the main thing was it got rid of that feeling of repetitiveness. Someone mentioned that they had heard (hehe, reliable info!) that most of the modes were already programmed into the ROMs, they just weren't activated. I don't know if that means only the game settings or also the animations, but it all looked legit. Even the new audio cues sounded identical to the original voices.

How does the Cowboys and Aliens mode feel seamless with the rest of the game? It sounds jarring to me, especially as it doesn't seem like it fits with the "story" of the player character cleaning up the town and getting promoted. Unless the aliens were already there...

Hopefully, the guys who did the Medieval Madness remake will do a Cactus Canyon remake, and this time they make more of them so I can actually play one of those two on location. Cactus Canyon Continued sounds so ridiculously rare...I know it's a labor of love, but I know I would never stand a chance of getting to play it, as would most other people.

What's seamless is the humor of the event. The DMD scrambles, suddenly an AFM UFO appears among cactus on the display, and the crazy music starts. At the end of the mode, the 'narrator' says something to the effect that "those were the strangest geckos I've ever seen". It fits as a callback to another table, and you are still cleaning up the town, just of aliens! It's a 2 ball multiball (I think) and is just a nice break from yet another Gold Mine Multiball, with Stampede currently being the other (and rare) alternative. It's less jarring, more whacky. And it's different, since you only want to shoot Bart to score, as if he was the UFO on AFM.

These other objectives are obviously not on the playfield, so keeping track is a challenge, and I don't know how it affects the ultimate end as I only got one game in. Gimme a few hours with it and I might be able to tell you more. I'm positive Bionic Part is in play, and the DMD did keep doing what I'd call 'subtitles' informing you of how many more hits you needed for some of the new objectives.

Hah, that alien infiltration bit sounds classic. Glad it feels solid, I've never really played a game based on P-ROC before (other than Predator) so I'd have no idea how a game on that platform would feel compared to it's original counterpart.

I know Planetary are releasing their "WPC 2.0" in a short while with a view to releasing BoP 2.0 on it, maybe we'll see a more attainable (read: cheaper) version of Cactus Canyon with this complete code in the future? With any luck, PP will do what Stern did with that guy who updated Star Wars (well, they already seem to have with Dutch Pinball, I guess) and make it widely accessible.

Tell me. Is the gold mine lock assembly on a real CC as easy to sneak balls into as it is in TPA?

To me, it seems like the TPA lock assembly is modelled using a broken or incomplete assembly. You can shoot balls into it when it is in the closed position.

I remember thinking it was tougher, but still pretty easy. It does brick on occasion unlike the TPA version which is almost a guarentee. But I did only play two games.

I forgot that I saw Drunk Multiball! Yeah, that is pretty awesome too.

Well, because I don't think to Google these things, the above inspired me to find this...
