Mods and admins have been doing a really good job on the forums from what I've seen the whole time I've been here. It's sometimes hard to balance between keeping trolls and just generally terrible people in check and being so heavy-handed you create an oppressive atmosphere on forums. It does probably help that the pinball community in general is smaller and less confrontational than some, but still. Great work on making a fine place for everyone.

I am proud of everyone who has tried to keep the forum a safe and calm environment. The few users that have angered me (I will not mention any) are gone thanks to these members - if they weren't here our forum would basically turn into the current Facebook page, full of making fun of people's requests and constant begging for whatever the heck "adam's famly" is

I was wondering if the message board member Skill Shot got banned? Is that the same guy as Mark? When I first joined this forum I used to read his posts and most of his stuff was real funny. Under the section of where it usually reads senior member his read "banned."

Yes, SKILL_SHOT has been permanently banned as well. SKILL_SHOT and Mark Wyda are two different users.

Why did SKILL_SHOT get banned anyway? Was there something in the chat room that I missed?
A number of reasons/evidence prompted the mod team to terminate SKILL_SHOT's membership. Rest assured, he was given plenty of lenience before the final ban was issued.

The unfortunate thing is that some of these guys really added some good discussion to the forum but they just couldn't filter themselves. I think pretty much everyone has "bad" thoughts but we are able to filter ourselves and not post everything that we think of. Other people fall victim to the thought that if it's true then it's OK to post. Not everything that is true is acceptable or even relevant material to post.

Too bad about Skill_Shot some of his comments were true and witty but what stops him/her from making another account under a different alias?

I know it's likely a rhetorical question, but I guess discussing that kind of thing (ban circumvention) openly is frowned upon by the mods and would warrant a warning...

It's pretty easy in most cases to detect banned members registering new accounts. Our methods aren't perfect, of course, but even in situations where previously-banned members have managed to create new personas for themselves, they usually give the game away fairly quickly by the contents and/or style of the posts made under the "new" accounts.

Brakel nailed it. Some people have no internal filter, or at best, a damaged one. I think the anonymous shield everyone has behind the keyboard plays a part in it too. You might think this crazy, but before you send out anything-email, IM, whatever, ask yourself if you would send it to your mother.

As others have said, we've seen some banned users register on here again, and they're usually banned within a month or two because they post the same sort of stuff that they were banned for in the first place. I think we've had one user who was banned and came back with a new account and hasn't been a problem since (though I can't remember who that was now).

The point of banning someone isn't necessarily to get rid of the person, but the problems they were bringing to the forum. Mark had an account on here that he used for awhile before we banned it because he was acting the same as he was when he was banned in the first place. His early posts were normal until he reverted to his "regular" posts.

I would rather a person leave on their own volition than be banned. Some people have dared the mods to ban them, which turns out to be an easy request to fill. If you don't want to be here, why stay? Just don't log on anymore, that simple. That way, when the situation has cooled down a bit, you can rejoin and resume as if nothing happened. I know I rarely stay mad at anyone in real life for longer than 30 minutes, as it is too much energy spent being pissed. With anonymous internet people, I don't get mad at all.

There have been a few banned members who's acting out in the forum seems more like a cry for help. Some of these people I reached out to and tried to 'talk them down' so to speak. On occasion it works, on others not so much. There is only so much you can do for internet friends. I find it hard to believe that being banned from a site such as this could equate to hitting rock bottom, but based off of how much some people have been disturbed by such actions, you really feel sad for whatever else is going on in their life that this might have been their one refuge. Sometimes letting 'em hit the bottom though is the best thing you can do for them.

The IP addresses generally match. Mods can check that.

Don't think that's exposing some secret as it's pretty much a standard message board feature.

What's amazing to me is how well people get along here. I've been a mod on several boards going back to the BBS days and I've always seen a correlation between the commonality of the members off the boards with their behavior on the boards. The more in common a group has in real life then the better behaved they are on the boards. So the sporting group that I am a mod of the forum and past board member of the club, has never had to ban anyone on the forum in over ten years (except for spammers). I attribute this to the fact that the core group all know each other in real life and have a lot in common.

What surprises me with this group is that the group as a whole only has two things in common. One is a love of pinball and the second is that we all live on earth. You can really throw out the second one because other than a few people on the space station everyone who is on the Internet lives on earth.

So, while it is disappointing that some people have to be banned, it is also heartwarming that the rest of us get along so well. The magic of pinball? I think yes.
