Arcade - Asteroids, Galaga, Gradius, 1942

DC - Ikaruga, Border Down, Mars Matrix, Zero Gunner 2, Psyvariar, Gunbird 2

Sega-CD - Silpheed,

Neo•Geo - Viewpoint,

PS1 - In the Hunt, Raystorm, Einhander, Raiden Project, Philosoma, Thunder Force V

Add to the arcade collection: Air Duel (IREM)

Add to the PS2 collection: Silpheed (it was ported to PS2)

Add to the PS1 collection: Viewpoint (a terrible port, with extreme slowdown.)

PS1: The Raystorm/RayCrisis franchise was a great favourite of mine. Einhander was fantastic, and a very different title from SQUARE.

Also add to the PS1, the Dodonapachi series. I had a modchipped PS1 here in Aussie and a good "importer" ;)

Philosoma. What a great concept for a shooter, but it was too far ahead of it's time. The PS1 just couldn't do polygon rendering that was required to keep the cutscenes native game graphics quality.

I remember a review at the time saying something like "yeah, the game is OK now. But I'll be looking forward to Philosoma 2 in a few years time". I still remember there is a cut scene in that game where things are chasing you and then it cuts to another cutscene. The devs didn't have time to finish the level, or it got cut before the disks were minted.

Why add the bad port of Viewpoint on the PS1? The Neo•Geo port is where it's at.

Ikaruga is one of my all-time favorites. I was sad the day the Dreamcast died. In the Arcade I love Asteroids and centipede (and even millipede). Tempest I loved and still play on MAME and I also had the ill-fated Jaguar with its one and only good game Tempest 2000. Vector graphics, now those I miss! Resogun for the PS4 is a decent shoot-em-up and I agree Sine Mora was excellent.

Man I wish Smash TV was more available for the PC. :(

Though for Robotron, I do have Ultratron on Steam.

Yeah, I love the twin stick shooters too. There should be a new thread for those. ;)

For PC I would just go with MAME and a dual stick (PS2 or an actual arcade stick even).

I recommend the awesome Midway Origins collection. I bought it for the PS3. It has 30 games, most of which play perfectly and can be bought now for only $16. It's worth it alone for Smash TV and Robotron 2084.

I have a JP 360 and a JP Saturn for shmups.

I'll admit I'm not as much a fan of the genre now as I was about 5 years ago, but I'll still play every once in a while. Pinball pretty much replaced them as my go-to gaming fix.

I go through a sort of shmup mania every five years or so, and I'm currently in it deep. Recently spent a wad of cash getting caught up on all the region free games for the 360, and I've been going hog wild between those and my older stuff for the Saturn and Dreamcast. Currently awaiting delivery of Sturmwind, a 2013 Dreamcast release.

Silvergun was actually the game that got me into the genre, as one of the more savvy magazines at the time - Gamefan I think - ranted and raved about it, and I, being addicted to Gunstar Heroes at the time, decided to try it out based on this pedigree, since my bro - never a big video gamer but working at Electronics Botique at the time, and thus caught in the hype of his fellow coworker's enthusiasms - had just bought (well, technically stolen) a Saturn with an ST-Key. Sort of a planets aligning type of situation.

TxK is on sale for PS+ owners starting today.

Resogun for the PS4 is a lot of fun. Basically a twin-stick Defender with excellent graphics.

txk is getting great refiews but fir thr majoiry the vita is a niche platform and bery few have the cash to buy ine for a single game no matter how good.

mimter seems to dislike appstores now with a passion, not without good reason, his very good games almost bombed.

but id wuestion how long vita sales will continue for.

its tempest and its on possibky the smallest current mobile platform, ios at a real price! including comtroller support lol, and very least pc damnit.
