Would be nice to be able to watch others play.
For instance I would like to see the game from the player that has the high score in the tournament.
Could be a video online, or in the game itself.
I think a lot of tactics can be learned from watching others play.

A 'share game video' button or something after the game has finished.

You'll start seeing a lot more gameplay videos/streaming once the PC version hits I think. Most people don't have the equipment to make videos off consoles etc. I don't think making it a part of the game itself is very feasible.

Yes true, more videos but don't think that top players will start recording everything.

The game itself can record everything and play it back with the render engine that is already there. This would also require less data then when using a videostream. Games like Call of Duty that give you a short replay of yourself being shot is more or less the same technique.

What I meant is I'm fairly sure there's no simple way to make the engine record play efficiently if it hasn't been built that way from the start. I'm not an expert on the subject, but I've heard that from several games that people wanted similar things implemented on.

Really? Is that an import?

I thought HDMI had some non-recording rules in its licensing but maybe my information is outdated.. that seems to happen to me more and more frequently.

I plan to start recording some videos on the Mac for a new website I've created. Right now all I've uploaded is a demo test vid.

Recording is OK. But I think it will be nicer to have a button 'watch game' after every leaderboard score.
So you view the leaderboards in the actual game and a button 'watch game' will show you the game that was played.

I currently play on iPad only. A happauge will not work there. Lots of players are just on mobile only. I would like to check out the top score games :)

How did you record that, on what kind of hardware/software combo? I'm on an Early 2008 MacBook Pro with 10.8.3 and when I tried screen recorders (QuickTime Player and Snapz Pro X) the framerate dropped so much the game was slow. It may be because this machine is from the stone age compared to the newer models which are more powerful. The game plays fine by itself with all the graphics settings turned up, though.

After some thought on the subject, I may end up waiting until the PC version comes out to continue my videos. While I love my 27in 2560x1440 LED display on my mid 2010 iMac 10.8.3, the controls leave a lot to be desired. I've managed to get the 360 controller working pretty good with a program called "enjoy". The problem is if I'm holding a flipper button, I can't nudge. As you can imagine this has led me to do some strange things to make decent scores. =) The software I'm using to record the videos on OS X is called "Screenflow". It offers a ton of options and fair video quality.

There's no way this is going to happen. It would require completed games to be uploaded from player's devices to farsight's servers.

This could be an interesting way to capture highlights from a game.

Imagine you had a graph, with elapsed game time on the x axis, and game score on the y axis. The parts of the graph that show a hugh jump up would be the interesting parts of the game ("Suuupa jaaaackpooot! Oh baby!") you would only need to grab a few frames of gameplay around those moments.

I don't think you can do this on an iPad. I have the HDMI connector, and tried playing TPA on my TV and the game was jumpy. This also affected the physics, giving a lot more weight to the ball. I was looking to get a device to record gameplay (to aid in beta testing issues), and was bummed this wasn't going to work.

To record an iOS device, you can use something like Reflector or AirServer. (Reflector is available on OS X, and Airserver is available on OS X and on Windows.) These apps will receive iOS mirroring just like an Apple TV would, and you can record this footage using any standard screen recording software.

The frame rate is pretty hit and miss when doing this, but it’s probably good enough for most purposes. You’re not going to be able to “play” your game on the bigger screen, because of the lag, but if you’re just trying to record what’s happening on screen, it’ll probably get the job done.


What I’d like to see in Pinball Arcade is in-engine recording. You can get a glimpse of something similar in A.S.K. Homework’s “Age of Pinballs”. In this app, you can purchase a rewind feature, as part of their “Bonus Aids” in-app purchase. With this enabled, you can press a rewind button, and the action will rewind a few seconds, and play back your last few moments in reverse, in engine, before letting you try that part again. (Note: I just tried this again, in “Age of Pinballs”, and it doesn’t seem to be working anymore. A bug, perhaps?)

Ideally, I’d like to see this kind of in-engine recording in Pinball Arcade. It would be native quality on playback, and it wouldn’t take up anywhere near as much space as an actual video. Who knows how much work this will take to implement, though. But it would be great to be able to see how some of the better players are playing. I’ve learned a lot this way from other games, like with the ghost cars in Super Mario Kart, and even from an iOS game, with Jet Car Stunts. (Sadly, this feature is no longer available, because of the shut down of OpenFeint.)

In-engine playback actually takes totally ridiculous amounts of space. The only way you can get around this is if you have the engine simply record player actions and replay the game based on that. The problem with this is that pinball isn't entirely deterministic. There are (semi-)random rolls in some situations on some tables and that would throw the entire thing off kilter. These things are also almost completely impossible to implement without rebuilding the entire game engine with that in mind.

It's not possible on the ps3 because the HDMI out is protected at all times. On the 360 the protection is only active if the content is protected. Such as Netflix.

It's pretty bad as well on my Samsung devices. Even tried on a TV with 1080i at 60fps as opposed to the 30 fps limit at 1080p and it was jumpy.
