What do you think the Season 3 Stern will be?

So we know what the stern table will most likely be

Yeah... bit of a bummer. Kind of feels like FS only went for it because it was one of the only easy modern Sterns to acquire. With a little license pursuit it could have been a lot better. But I haven't played the table so it could surprise me.

Are we allowed to talk vaguely about it without actually mentioning the name?

Well, there's no reason why you can't talk about High Roller Casino just by itself with no connection to The Pinball Arcade whatsoever, considering there are machines available for the public to play. At least, that's what I think was meant...

So I read up a bit more about High Roller Casino.

According to Stern there are a bunch of "mechanical action devices" on the game (they stated the roulette and slot machine as examples). I also looked up the Pinball News article about the game and they stated that it was a "decision-based" game, like WHO dunnit or Junkyard except much less linear. Either way it sounds like a good Stern table.

I've seen videos, the roulette tables looks pretty sick.

How about Big Buck Hunter? Is there a license attached to that?

Cambellas I believe?

Still I would think that's very affordable license. I mean it's hard to imagine that's more expensive than say, Harley Davidson to license.

BBH, TFTC, BSD, RCT (hope people know what these stand for by now), Monopoly, F-14 Tomcat, Indy 500, Road Show, Sharkeys Shootout - there, a reasonably cheap licensed Season 5 boom done :)

Big Buck Hunter Pro is a licensed table, based on the arcade game series by Raw Thrills. I don't think it should cost that much, as the Big Buck Hunter series has fallen out of mainstream popularity. Well, I'm seeing them replaced with Let's Go Jungle and random Time Crisis games at the arcades I've visited.

What the hell is "Cambellas?" Do you mean Cabelas? :p

I think BBH is owned by Raw Thrills or its original developer, Play Mechanix.

hahahah. well, you know, that company that promotes killing wild animals. The one that's all about gunz and spittin tabbaco. *hocks* *spits*.

I find it interesting how there was so much bile thrown at Stern when Big Buck Hunter Pro came out, but that's been largely replaced by praise for the game. Stern should re-release it.

I actually got to play Big Buck Hunter Pro for the first time Wednesday this week. I quite liked it, though it's as mean as people have said it is. (Few non-EM pinball machines are as mean as AC/DC though.)

Same with Iron Man. People on Pinside HATED it at first (AUSTIN POWERS RETHEME! CHEAP! TERRIBLE PLAYFIELD!) but then learned to love it after discovering how daunting and grueling it is.

Also occurred with Star Trek but a little less.

Yeah, I've been studying what people like and dislike about pinball, and that sort of hatred was one of the bigger mysteries to me. It looks like it boiled down to two reasons. The first is that Stern had lowered production costs without lowering the price. I can understand why people would feel cheated upon that. (You can see a similar phenomenon in the supermarket where canned, bottled, and boxed groceries are packed in smaller and smaller containers.) With time, people have forgotten about those prices and they are now circulating around the used market. NBA in particular seems to have become a hot item because only 300 were made.

The second is that, up until a few months ago, there was some weird grudge against Stern that was strong among pinball fans. This is something I'm still trying to look into, but I think it stems largely from Stern not being Bally or Williams and from Stern's downmarket strategy. The pinball fans tend to be upmarket, and when Stern's business strategy was to go further downmarket, this increased the ire against Stern and flavored their perception of every table made during this period. This seems to have been alleviated with limited editions for that upmarket audience, as well as the existence of Jersey Jack Pinball to serve the upmarket. As for Stern not being Bally or Williams, people seem to like to point at some tables that aren't that well liked, overlooking the fact that Bally and Williams had their ups and downs in the '90s too. (There is also a small group who accuses Stern of being dependent on licensed properties, but licensed games sell. Simple as that.)

The fact that this topic even exists leads me to believe that Stern is currently gaining respect among pinball fans. AC/DC, Metallica, and Star Trek have gotten rave reviews (with Mustang too new), though the Internet Pinball Database has some weird force that pushes any Stern machine off the top 10.

Dreaming.......

Wouldn't it be completely awesome if we were surprised with Star Trek as the next Stern table?

I think if TPA released any Stern newer than a Whitestar controlled one in the next pack(s) then we might see all the cries for TAF replaced with newer shinier titles.
