Wow, I'm surprised to see so many people answering wrong!
1981 is the year.
Don't want to pull out any lists, but few that I can name:
Jungle Lord https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6gkq3N2tCI
Lightning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjq9woBNZt4
Pharaoh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9h1t7hXLKNI
Embryon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TRx-wmI_Kg
Fireball 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16j6Aqz6RU0
Vector https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgWCOJno4-4
Solar Fire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFNgxn-MR78
Medusa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9R4l1IQs3qE
Elektra https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6Q3xL90iRo

Every of these pinballs are fantastic... and now that I think about it... none of them are not even released in PBA yet...
:D
Also art in pinballs was so great back then. Pinballs looked so good. ...aaand I like pinballs with 3 levels, or two at least and some sidezones.

I want to say early 90's When Mortal Kombat ruled the arcades, the pins TAF and Lethal Weapon 3 were eating up just as many quarters cause of the new DMD displays

Might I add that every single one of the above games has Multi-Ball.

Being an old fart, I'd argue that the best years were late 60s to early 70s. Only because most arcades instead of having a 6 or 7 machines had a couple of dozen. Then again, one could argue that the beginning of the mega-mall era was prime as an arcade could be found in every single one.

That's a good point...and just when pinball tech was increasing in leaps and bounds in the early to mid 90's, malls were dying off and, with them, their precious arcades. Thanks Wal-mart! :D
