Why is the needle sterilized for lethal injections ?

I would imagine either to mitigate the risk if the person performing the injection accidentally gets stuck, or to make sure there is no infection in the case of a last minute reprieve. Both are probably somewhat unlikely scenarios, but why risk it when there is no downside?

Yeah, the irony irks me as well. We don't do that in NJ anymore. Regardless it's back to Firepower, the true killer. Dunno why I chose it for my game of the night, but I did, and it hurts so good.
