Nope it's a free app. FarSight told me today:
Below is there reply:

The Pinball Arcade: We're still designing the monetization model. All we can confirm right now is that it will be out soon, and the app will be free to download.

So it sounds like a (cash cow) credit app. to me.

It's a free app that doesn't require you to buy anything if you're willing to wait (and possibly earn) for tokens and if not, you can either purchase the table outright for unlimited free play or purchase tokens if you don't want to wait for (or earn) free tokens and you don't wish to purchase the table outright. Again, it's not a hard concept to grasp.

I'm not a fan of freemium, but if they followed what Blizzard did with Hearthstone, that'd be awesome. That game never hits you over the head with purchasing ads, it allows you to play and earn gold with relative ease, and the only penalty for not paying is you have to grind to move forward. Yeah, you are punished by having to play the game more!

We can only hope this is the model FarSight follows. If they don't though, it's no skin off my back. I play plenty of free games, and they grab my attention for a few weeks and then I move on to the next once I start hitting that pay wall.

I love Hearthstone. :D

What's your name on there?

True...believe it or not, there are a lot of people who would rather pay a small price for a certain amount of tokens that allows them to play any of the 50+ tables without a score limit (per token) than to spend an average of $100 to purchase all 50+ tables. Then, if they like certain tables, they still have the option to purchase said table for unlimited free play and continue to use their tokens on other tables they're not so crazy about.

This business model wouldn't affect those of use who purchase the tables outright.

Good. On my old phone, I had the Namco and Capcom arcade collections. These two games taught me how to hate the use of "tokens" in a game app. I prefer to own the games I buy. It's troubling enough that downloads are becoming the norm (although there are plenty of physical copies of great games to play), but I'd rather buy a real bag of candy for $1.99 than spend a dollar, and another, and another, and so on smashing it.

I'll keep purchasing tables on TPA, so long as they keep putting them out.

There used to be these things that required tokens in order to play pinball machines. You could play as many times as you wanted, provided you kept putting tokens in each time you played.

Now, what were these things?

Oh yeah... Arcades.

There are some parallels between F2P and arcades, but I don't think there is enough value in F2P games to be considered on the same level as an arcade atmosphere. They are generally cheap games that you wouldn't pay more than $5 for, but demand that you pay $100.

Owning hardware arcade equipment is a difficult proposition for many. The games cost $2000-$4000 back then or so if I recall, and arcade machines are bulky boxes that take up lots of space. Hence the arcade / token type model. That's not as necessary for software since you don't have the manufacturing overhead (just the coding overhead).

I prefer ownership myself for anything that I would be playing a lot. There's another parallel to consider. Even back then, people bought hardware arcade games for home, despite the difficulties. It's a different experience than home consoles and mobile games, after all. Particularly something physical like pinball. Now, most arcades have closed these days, so apart from emulations (which will never be exact with something like pinball), actually owning an arcade game may be some people's only way to actually play it.

The same goes with cloud / download type games: once a business closes (and no business stays open forever), the game / app may disappear.

A lot of people (particularly in the mobile world) complain about paying for *anything*, though, so I absolutely see why (if they chose to) they might go F2P.

Are you sure there will be an option to purchase the table? From FarSights replays I don't deduce that, but I may have missed something. I agree that some people (people that are really bad at math.....kind of like people who play the lottery) that would rather buy tokens again and again at a smaller price then if they actually bought the game and I think in the long run if TPA makes more money that it will be a good thing for pinball arcade. As long as we always will have the option to buy the tables outright and win free tokens on replays that would apply towards this new platform. Of course they will have to modify all the older tables in pinball arcade to pay tokens or whatever. They can't keep up with all the bugs so I'm not sure that is feasible. I love FarSight and God bless them if they can make more money but hopefully they won't hurt the people like us who have been there since the beginning. Sorry for being so long winded.

I guess they read a market study that confirmed that most people are actually bad at math as you describe.
That's why everyone goes for that in-game purchase bull****.
In addition the psychology component is a b**ch too.
This means: sales sales sales

Confirmed in POTO twitch feed:
Standalone app, mobile only.
Mod of Haunted House.
Ghostbusters 1 & 2 theme!
No mention of monetization model. Don't think anyone asked actually.

Interesting that they chose Haunted House to mod. It's not exactly the greatest layout in the world.

If they can make that table something I actually want to play, I'll consider that a victory. One things for sure...gotta love the license!

Is this going to be released on Steam? Farsight makes it seem as though it's going to be mobile only, which means they won't be getting my money. Can't stand playing much of anything on a tiny iPhone screen.

If it were on Steam on the other hand, I'd gladly pay $5 or so to have it as a special TPA DLC table, separate from the regular licensed seasons.

Doing a non-real world table seems weird. Simulating real world tables is what they do. Virtual tables would waters down their brand at least it would to me.

No different than Orbals or anything else. If you like it, play it. If not, ignore it. We'll still get our monthly TPA pin.
