That's...certainly one way of putting it. The current Activision really can't be linked to the Activision that made Pitfall!, though—it's changed hands several times and been acquired by Vivendi on top of that. Still, they've at least shown some respect for their roots (on a related note, The...
During the thread I started requesting a two-DMD pack, I had occasion to discuss Table Pack #5 with Mark Wyda. I mentioned that I seemed to remember the icon for that month being Taxi, but he informed me that it actually was Harley-Davidson, since that was new to TPA, whereas Taxi was a PHOF...
I certainly second the love for Pitfall!, but it's actually not the game I play most often on AA (that honor goes to Enduro, though Atlantis, Dragonfire and River Raid usually also get love from me when I open AA). Yes, it is amazing and a delectable taste of things to come re: Metroidvanias...
Is there any chance of seeing a Stern Electronics table in TPA before the end of 2013? I'd love to see either Catacomb or Nine Ball, but Lightning, Quicksilver and Seawitch all look like they'd be great fun, as well.
That's the game, alright! Now just give me the name of the villain for full credit. Here's a hint: what are rowdy soccer fans often called?
I'm glad you liked the write-up and learned a few things from it, too! Activision really were incredible back in the Atari 2600 days. Since I see you...
I had to mull this one over for a while, but now I think I've come up with not just one, but four possible answers! Here's what I came up with:
-Straight new vs. re-release, straight description: If we're meant to read this month's riddle completely straight, then the new table will have the...
That's the one! Just for future reference, please provide the name of the villain as well as the game he's from for full credit in the future (you'll get full credit this time, though). Here goes entry #19!
19. The Mad Bomber (Kaboom!)
Developed & Published By: Activision
Platform: Atari 2600...
OK, let's see what I can come up with:
1. World Poker Tour
2. Ripley's Believe It Or Not!
5. Star Trek: The Next Generation
6. Medieval Madness
7. Bram Stoker's Dracula
8. Junkyard
9. Doctor Who
11. Indiana Jones: The Pinball Adventure
12. Twilight Zone
14. Demolition Man
15. Fish Tales
16...
That's right! Since my next villain's name has a word in common with the title, I'll credit you with the full guess. Here we go!
20. The Marble Munchers (Marble Madness)
Developed & Published By: Atari Games
Platform: Arcade
Year of Release: 1984
In modern gaming, exceptionally bizarre...
That's point #2 for you, jkonami! Here's the scoop on this mad mage of the arcade:
21. The Wizard of Wor (Wizard of Wor)
Developed & Published By: Bally Midway
Platform: Arcade
Year of Release: 1980
Unlike some titles on this list, Wizard of Wor is very much an entry carried by its villain...
How could you leave out Black Knight 2000? The game invented the wizard mode (or at least was the first to codify it into something modern players would recognize as such) and has one of the best sound packages ever, so there's no way you can consider TPA complete without it (besides, Steve...
Here's another clue to go with that quote from the game: the game I'm thinking of is one of the few I've seen where Player 1's controls are on the right instead of the left.
Just to reiterate, I'm not asserting that a table needs a DMD to be great. The suggestion of a two-DMD pack was merely intended as some friendly advice about how to quell the unrest that the lackluster Table Pack #11 caused amongst TPA's most vocal fans. It certainly isn't the only idea...
That's the one! Here we go with the next writeup:
22. Coily (Q*Bert)
Developed & Published By: Gottlieb
Platform: Arcade
Year of Release: 1982
Compared to some of the games on this list, Q*Bert hasn't had quite the same overt impact. However, it has had a substantial—if somewhat more...
I have seen differentiation between early solid states, later solid states and DMDs for purposes of tournaments, which could be the source of the confusion. May I ask what the dividing line between early & later solid states is considered to be? I'm guessing that it isn't just the transition...
I'll admit I was probably a little too arcane for my own good on this one; I have a tendency to get a little too wrapped up in my own cleverness when I do things like this. That clue was actually supposed to lead you to the name of the villain, though—you'll see why momentarily:
23. Flotsam...
I feel your pain, Sinistar. I started a thread requesting (though I'd term it more as politely suggesting) a pack that had two DMD tables, since Table Pack #11 had been a source of so much dissension. To my chagrin, it turned into a debate on whether or not we were entitled to such a thing...
Table Pack #10 was also a double SS pack—Genie is a solid-state machine, even if it feels much more like a Gottlieb EM (which makes sense, since it is a Gottlieb design).
It is indeed Toobin'. I actually meant the CPU opponent (the purplish dude who replaces Bif or Jet in single-player games). Do you want to guess at his name or should I simply go on to his entry on the list?
