Why would Stern be out to promote pins they are no longer producing? I highly doubt they would reacquirie a license just to make a digital version. If we want TSPP, I'll bet we will need a Kickstarter.
The speculations on the blahcade podcast feel about right to me.
Some things looked good and some bad. It looked like it played smooth and the lighting was nice.
How bad was the DMD animation during video mode? In 2015 I expect better.
Did they ever mention if this would be a separate app? Image all the time wow would spend with a pinball construction kit. If they do this, I hope there is a way to share creations with friends.
I agree with you. The season passes are the way to go if you can afford them. Even the tables I don't like, I play once in a while just for variety. I've played every pin at least 25 times including Goin' Nutz, which I personally hate.
Some of the retro style LEDs have a softer look that I like in many pins. I've seen some ultra brights placed in classic EM pins that really looked terrible to me. It's not easy to do tasefully.

I see it almost the opposite way. I think the new deal hurts future kickstarters. With new licensed pins being made, I fear we have seen our last Kickstarter. I also fear that Stern will not go back to get expired older licenses for older pins like TSPP for the new app.
I hope you are right...
I'd guess Stern sees this as a way to sell pins. So I'd think it will consist of pins currently in production, future vault editions, and all future new Stern pins.
As usual I agree with karl, I don't think they will be reacquiring older licenses like LOTR, TSPP, or Tron, unless they are...
