Any TPA Tables You Regret Buying?

Thanks for that. (And thanks very much for the YouTube channel link. I thought I'd found all the really good pinball channels already!) Yes, it's still a drain monster -- as most of these tables were -- but the real thing just looks so much nicer. (Admittedly, they've done a really good job...

Any TPA Tables You Regret Buying?

On my iPad it just seems overly simplistic. The nudging is just hopeless, there is no ball shadow, no proper ball reflection, no background noises. It's all a bit sterile and basic. I'd probably like the machine in real life, but on the iPad at least, this is just a basic drain monster.

    A VERY dangerous thread!

I think the consoles need a different UI from the touch devices. Right now, they're trying to shoehorn the same approach on to different input methods, and it doesn't really work.

Dr Dude and Firepower Announced for February!

Haven't played Dr Dude. Doesn't really float my boat, but at least it's variety. I've loved Firepower since forever. Just the sheer speed and brutality of the game. And the noise. In real life, it's a very imposing table. Regarding the emulation ... is there a technical reason why Firepower...

    Zen Pinball - Star Wars

Keep in mind that Marvel (Disney) have negotiated separate, distinct rights for their properties, between Stern and Zen. e.g. Stern has Iron Man, Avengers, X-Men tables. But so does Zen. And the tables aren't related to each other, apart from sharing IP. So I think it's safe to say we'll...

    Zen Pinball - Star Wars

I have the trails on. Turns out that it really helps the gameplay, particularly in multiball. The trails help you see not only where the balls are, but what their trajectories are when moving at high speed. This doesn't always look good in a trailer or YouTube video at 30fps, but it's very...

    Zen Pinball - Star Wars

Oops, sorry Richard. I misread what you had said. [snip] Lord Boron is probably right. Trying to secure older licenses, even when Lucasfilm own the primary rights, might be a lot of trouble. There's regional deals, exclusivity, the original manufacturer's designs and IP, etc.

    It's All Your Fault FARSIGHT

Jeepers. $400 and $850 tables. Clearly, you do not live in Australia. ;)

How did your love for pinball begin?

Video games were my first love -- Space Invaders, Galaxian, Rally X and Pengo had me in their grip -- but I always loved looking at the pinnies. (Maybe even more than playing them, sometimes, seeing as how ruthless the tables were. This was a big issue for a kid without much money: the pinball...

    Zen Pinball - Star Wars

As Bonzo implies... Lucasfilm was sold to Disney. Zen already had very successful deals with Disney through Marvel. They're a known quantity, and have shown they can produce the goods even with the strictest of IP requirements. Also, FS don't create original games (at least currently). Huge...

Checked out Wizard Of Oz by Jersey Jack today *pics*

I'm not interested in the theme at all. But... the art direction looks good. And they look as though they care about design. Compare to Stern's recent offerings: XMen, Avengers, Rolling Stones, Transformers, ACDC. YUCK. IMO, these are very ordinary machines, in terms of art direction and...

    Zen Pinball - Star Wars

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmmSlXV5BMA [Sorry, video removed, no doubt at the request of Zen or Sony or Disney] The peeps over at BigShinyRobot snagged a pic: No stupid toys. A curiously flat design with just a couple of low ramps. Positively minimalist by Zen standards, doesn't look...

    Steam managers should read this

Yes, DRM gets cracked. We all know that. However, the purpose of most DRM is not to prevent all piracy. It's to prevent wholesale, casual piracy. The rights-holders want their products to have the best chance in the marketplace. Right now, this means some form of copyright protection. Here's...

    Whats your gaming set up?

Well, it may not be permanent, but let's put it this way: several months after I stopped play the game, I still have Borderlands 2 HUD showing up on my screen... Now, I really did hammer Borderlands 2, but still. It's really something to take in to consideration if you play the same games a lot.

    Random Tales of Glory...and Woe

Ah, they're related, but two different things. Even a completely deterministic system can exhibit pseudo-randomness. For example, you can design a system that will "randomly" produce variation in the elastic response of the slingshot rubbers, within a range. So you'll get slightly different...

    A VERY dangerous thread!

To see why this won't happen, please read this: http://digitalpinballfans.com/showthread.php/2992-An-Afternoon-At-FarSight-Studios The short version: game development is a harsh, cash-intensive business. FS needs ongoing revenue, including a stream of new products, along with stakeholder...

    A VERY dangerous thread!

Surprisingly little data needs to be sent. Kilobytes, rather than MB. Just a little bit of set-up data (the random seed, versioning, scores, checksumming, etc.) then pretty much all you send is the encoded inputs. In this case, that's the controller presses or screen touches. Happily, there's...

    Random Tales of Glory...and Woe

Feature Request: replays. I'd LOVE to watch other people's games! (Could be done using virtual-joysticks method. No video transfer required. Very bandwidth and server friendly.)

    Whats your gaming set up?

Got a 50" Viera plasma. Beautiful picture for movies, but couldn't recommend one for gaming. Has major image-retention and burn-in issues. Even using the image-retention mode and tools regularly. You start to value games like Minecraft, which have HUD opacity options...
