I suppose I better get my votes in...

Creature from the Black Lagoon vs Champion Pub - CFTBL gets the nod, because it's never a bad time to Move Your Car!, and the drive-in theme is nicely done. For some reason, the Pub has never caught on with me, despite my attempts to try to like it.

Whitewater vs Gorgar - Whitewater. Gorgar has a place in history as the first talking pinball, but I'd much rather be setting Bigfoot's toes aflame or listening to the 5X Jackpot victory yodel.

Black Hole vs Medieval Madness - Medieval Madness. Again, the older table may be a treasured historical monument, but I'll take the 90s William.

Flight 2000 vs Terminator 2 - But here the older table gets my vote. Terminator 2 has a very shallow ruleset, to the point where Flight 2000 might actually be more complex! I get bored on T2 fast, but trying to start Flight 2000's multiball for some reason holds my interest.

Star Trek: The Next Generation vs Theatre of Magic - I like ST:TNG's theme and the audio work is very nice ("Thank you, Mr. Data!"), but the overemphasis on Borg Multiball makes it a one-dimensional game. Theatre takes the victory, despite being somewhat too easy, for combo-friendly play and a variety of modes.

Ripley's Believe it or Not! vs Taxi - I love Taxi, but RBION has finally worked its way alongside TZ in my heart. I'm still no good at the stacking needed for super-high scores, but the modes are fun and there's always something to shoot for.

Cactus Canyon vs Scared Stiff - Both tables are plagued by gameplay issues: CC with its random orbit bumps and SS with the Deadhead loop (but I hear rumors that's about to be fixed!). Both are valued more for their comedy than their gameplay. But SS's code is finished and let's face it, Elvira has better "assets".

No Good Gofers! vs Whirlwind - Whirlwind for me is the pinnacle of the System 11 machines. Fast pinball action for when I don't feel like bothering with TZ's or RBION's complexities, yet still just enough going on to keep me from getting bored. NGG takes a house ball on this one, against most other tables I would have favored it for Bud & Buzz (who are much funnier than Tee'd Off's Gunther) and the unique Hole-in-One shot.

Black Knight vs Pin*Bot - Ugh. I hate them both, primarily because I'm no good at either. But I guess Pinbot is the lesser evil.

Big Shot vs Monster Bash - No contest. Monster Bash is just too damned amusing to not advance.

FunHouse vs Tales of the Arabian Nights - TOTAN gets the vote primarily for the lamp and its art. If you've never examined a TOTAN carefully in real life, you should. It really is a beautiful machine.

Centaur vs Bride of Pin*Bot - Out of all the tables currently in TPA, Centaur comes closest to playing like its real counterpart.

Dr. Dude vs Attack from Mars - The doctor stands no chance against the Martians and their table's over-the-top delivery. Gameplay is not the most original, but the dots and audio are spectacular. Long live the Super Jackpots, Total Annihilation, and a Martian taking an extra ball to the face.

Cirqus Voltaire vs Space Shuttle - Despite CV's reputation for bugginess in TPA, it's still a lot more fun than Shuttle's go-for-multiball...over and over and over...

Class of 1812 vs Elvira and the Party Monsters - I was disappointed when I learned Class of 1812 was being released - I was hoping for Tales from the Crypt - but it has slowly grown on me, to the point where it narrowly edges out Elvira. Generally, if I want to play an Elvira game, I'm playing Scared Stiff instead.

Tee'd Off vs Twilight Zone - This is like using a cannon to kill a mosquito.

Creature from the Black Lagoon v Champions Pub - although neither really holds my interest for too long. CP has unfair drains and the rope and punchbag get boring real quickly. flippers on CFBL seem ever so slightly out (?). Creature by a nose

White Water v Gorgar - a no-brainer decision, Wh2O is simply great fun... great music too

Black Hole v Medieval Madness - the callouts are great

Flight 2000 v T2 - tough call again between mediocre tables however F2000 multiball is the clincher

Star Trek v Theatre of Magic - both are immensely satisfying to play when the the gods are with you...and when not, ST TNG is just such a complete b1tch so this is a protest vote against the frequent unfairness of ST TNG

Ripleys Believe it or Not v Taxi - easy this one. RBION is my favourite table. so satisfying with a great ruleset that always gives a sense of progression, achievement, fulfillment

Cactus Canyon v Scared Stiff - SS because it is fun, however most games last way too long and are normally abandoned before completion due to time constraints. there should be Tommy mode difficulty setting to this one!

No Good Gofers v Whirlwind - NGG is a great fun Pat Lawlor table. love making those hole-in-one shots. and hate the cacophanous and grating chain-mail fencing noise in WW

Black Knight v Pinbot - my nostalgia vote to Pinpot. such a pretty table and i love it's electronic bleeps, belches and burps

Big Shot v Monster Bash - MB is another simply good fun table

Funhouse v Tales of the Arabian Nights - TOTAN is another simply good fun table and well executed in TPA

Centaur v Bride of Pinbot - BoP gets my second nostalgia vote... though not as fun to play as PB. i still get nervous wehn i hear "my god she's alive" even when i think the ramp shots are far easier than they were IRL.

Dr Dude v Attack From Mars - i wasn't a fan of AFM when it was released however over time i have come to appreciate the whole package here. and i love whacking the ball around the orbits and up the ramps. this table has great flow. finally, i'd practically vote for any table before voting for DD

Cirqus Voltaire v Space Shuttle - CV is a fun sideshow distraction

Class of 1812 v Elvira and the Party Monsters - simply because it feels less shallow than Co1812

Teed Off v Twilight Zone - when the gods are smiling TZ is a great, fun, satisfying table

so there we have it, some very close battles in there, others not so close... one interesting (to me anyway) stat is that all of the 9 teams who made it through the preliminary round have been knocked out in this one.

next round will be up once ive done the draw...

So in almost every matchup of pins from different eras (EM / early solid state / alphanumeric / DMD), the table from the newer era won. Only Centaur over Bride went the other way, and even then the older era's best narrowly beat the newer era's dullest. I guess technology always marches on.

Whirlwind beat NGG also, which I was pleasantly surprised about

Even though it doesn't quite match all my votes, this is mostly what I expected. The only surprises to me was creature winning so soundly (thought it would be a close loss for that one) and Ripley beating taxi, especially in a sound victory. Looking forward to the next round! It's also interesting that two kickstarted tables are outta there!

Oops, yeah, misread it as Whitewater which is DMD.

Looking back at the preliminary round, "newer era wins" also held in all but one case, Big Shot over Cue Ball Wizard. And by only a single vote did a great EM beat a mediocre DMD.

Several older pins won, though:
CFTBL is older than CP
SS is older than CC
WWind is older than NGG
Centaur is older than BoP
Elvira is older than CO1812
5 of 16 older

And of the prelim round:
Fl2000 is older than El Dorado
CP is older than HD3rd (and also the Sega Harley Davidson)
Gorgar is older than Goin Nuts
Big Shot is older than CBW
4 of 9 older

Without my vote this would have been 1-30. This is strange because on the leaderboards BK is way more popular and with some bugfixing ...

You can't look at leaderboards for anything. pinbot is one of the newest tables, BK is one of the oldest.

Neither one is recent. New releases are more popular once they are available on all platforms. Neither is part of the core pack which seems to help.
