two games that regularly feature in top 5 lists of favourite pinballs are Attack From Mars (unlicensed) and Medieval Madness (unlicensed). then there's Theatre of Magic...

I'm not sure if you're aware, but Theatre of Magic actually was supposed to be licensed. It was designed as "The Magic of David Copperfield", but somehow or another, the deal fell through and it was converted to Theatre of Magic before release. That still works to your point, though, since Theatre of Magic is still quite well-regarded, even without the David Copperfield brand behind it.

As for good tables with bad licenses, I nominate Baywatch, Congo, Godzilla (which is based on the 1998 movie), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and T3.

Bad license / Great pin = Johnny Mnemonic
Ripley's Believe It or Not! is a pretty bad license also, but a pretty fun pin.

Good license / Bad pin = Rolling Stones....both the 79' and 2011 versions.
