Any one else a fan of the genre? They're hard to come by on PS3 but I love me some Soldner X 2 and Zanac Neo every once in a while. Not to mention popping on Taito Legends 2 on PS2 for the Darius games and Gekirindan.

Gate of Thunder for the TurboDuo was my childhood favorite. So was Blazing Lazers for the TurboGrafx-16. I also liked Einhander and R-Type Delta on the PS1.

Some of the Cave games on the iPad are pretty good. I enjoyed the Neo Geo classic Blazing Star on my iPhone until ios 7 screwed up the screen orientation and SNK doesn't seem inclined to fix it.

I'm a huge fan of shmups. I like the Toaplan games for Genesis, the Gradius series, R-Type, the Thunderforce series, Eschatos 360, the Cave shmups for 360, and various others. Last one I got was Cotton 2 for Saturn.

What's a shmup thread without mention of the Touhou series? It's quite an infamous series of shmups, which really focus on the enemy, rather than multitasking between the environment, and enemies. One of its main attactions, however, is the soundtrack. As of the sixth game and all, it's done entirely by one person. The maker, ZUN, also doesn't really care about people pirating his games. It's a popular series, and people are showing support.

I am a big fan but don't like the bullet hell sub-genre. I'm not good enough for those :)

I am a huge fan of the Raiden series, especially Raiden II. Favorite game has to be Time Pilot. Really enjoyed a lot of games on the SNES too - Axelay, Space Megaforce, UN Squadron, etc.

More recently the Soldner games and Under Defeat on PS3 are fun but the machine is definitely short on shmups compared to the 360.

Radiant Silvergun is the one true god of shmups forevermore. Too bad only about six people owned an import-modded Saturn to play it. Ikaruga got all the hype instead with an American release for the Gamecube. (Ikaruga is still great too, just not godly.)

I love the genre. I would go back to the primitive games like Galaga, Gyruss, Gaplus, Time Pilot and Xevious to the evolution with Section Z, Gradius series, Salamander, Alpha Mission and then the excellent TG16 games (as mentioned by many others, Blazing Lazers and Gates/Lords of Thunder). My all time favorite series was R-Type. I love the Wii and PS2 simply because Wii has all the great TG16 shooters and a few others and PS2 had the collection R-Types, the Gradius collection and new entries to R-Type and Gradius as well as Raiden games.

I have simple tastes - my favorite is 'Scramble'.
'Flying Shark' is another, used to spend hours playing this and 'Marauder' on a ZX Spectrum. Nowadays it's Mame4droid.

It's more the 200+ price preventing me from getting it. I do have some other Saturn shmups like Batsugun, Strikers 1945, Galactic Attack (Rayforce port. US version, not import), Gradius Deluxe Pack, Parodius Deluxe Pack, and Cotton 2, though. I also have the Konami MSX collection for Saturn, which has some shmups in it.

Edit: Doh. Checked ebay again. RS is closer to 150 from most sellers.

:Ahem: >.>¡¡

Haven't seriously played a SHMUP in a good while, and funny enough the game above was quite fun on the Wii's Virtual Console service including another called Gate of Thunder.

I also did enjoyed Jamestown, a newish retro style shooter more akin yo bullet-hell game type.

For Android, there are plenty of choices.

Sine Mora - XBox owners will know this one. Very solid shooter. Stunning graphics that give many Android devices a good Benchmarking. Falls into the bullet hell sub-genre, but is worth checking out. No controller support, which is frustrating because the touch interface controls really suck for such an intense shooter. Also not full 16:9 orientation (because it is a port).

Xelorians - terrific stereo effects used in this game. Pick up slow-down powerups to make the action crawl but your ship remain at the same speed. Great touch interface as well - you must keep your finger on the screen at all times, when you take your finger off the screen, the game pauses. Such a logical control system for touch devices. More should use it. GPG achievements and leaderboard.

Plasma Sky - standard shmup with the graphics all plasma line graphics. Think vector graphics but with more colour. Addictive. GPG achievements and leaderboard. Moga support.

Syder HD - a rather unique shooter that has you moving left and right throughout what can best be described as a space map. The map is shown at all times, and acts as an enemy radar displaying targets left to destroy. Moga Support.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parodius_(series)

That is my favorite series by far. Just a parody of the gradius series, it has better music and crazier characters in the game. Sexy Parodius is probably my favorite of the series. Love my shumps.

I still can't help myself when I see Scramble somewhere to have a go. I still have it and get to the end stage 4 times out of 5.

Does anyone remember the IREM shmup "Air Duel"? You could play an airplane or a helicopter. The helicopter had the advantage of being positionable. So you could angle your fire slightly off straight. Added an interesting dimension to gameplay.

paradous is fun but far too easy if youve any experience in shmups still crazy fun tho heh

Sexy Parodious on the Sega Saturn got insanly hard if you didn't lose any lives (It was modified compared to the arcade version). So as a home version I found it better than the arcade version. The score you would get if you didn't lose any lives was insane compared to if you dropped one now and again.

Anything after sexy parodius in that series is crazy hard even with two people.
