Two schools of thought. I can see on a ten pt scale where one would think 5 is average being the middle but 6.8 would be a 68% and if you were in school, that translates to a d+, in curved.

At my job a 6.8 sucks. If my survey scores averaged that, not only would I not get a raise but I'd be likely out of a job. Every time we get a survey back that says "fantastic experience" and we get a 7 I cringe because Nything below an 8 counts to me as a zero!

Yeah, but game reviews are a bit different. A 7 is considered a "good" rating at IGN for example. Same would apply to IPDB.

True but there are no guidelines and no guarantee they'd be followed. Only foolproof way would to have words corresponding to possible scores. Then it is a common interpretation at least. I bet scores would probably even out muh more.

I knew someone would bring up school grades and such. Schools and jobs expect you to always do well. That's why they have strict standards like that.

Though really, more places should just use a 1-5 scale if they consider something lower than 7 to be "bad". Everything lower than that is just padding and doesn't matter.

In a realistic situation, 5 should be average. As in, it's not bad and it's not good. 6 is above average, meaning that it's not bad at all, though it isn't stellar either. 6.8 is nearly 7, which *should* be considered good.

That's why IGN does exactly that. I think it's pretty well the standard among sites that use 1-10 ratings, so 7 is generally considered to be a good score among gamers.

Well let's look at it this way. FarSight has said they wanted to showcase most of the best tables of all time. I know, I know. They said top 50. But let's be lenient and say "best." They've consistently cited ratings from ipdb and pinside when promoting a table. And why not? They're great sources for pinball rankings from people who, mostly (I hope), have played the table multiple times IRL. HRC is not even in the top 200, let alone 100 pins on pinside. BUT, then again, neither was HD:3rd Edition and we got that one shoehorned in to fill the modern Stern gap.

Sooo...I'll concede to the logical inclusion of HRC as a modern Stern for this season if FarSight couldn't reasonably secure the rights to Monopoly, NASCAR (I don't think this is a good worldwide seller though), or Roller Coaster Tycoon. Otherwise, consider me befuddled.

High Roller Casino, Sharkeys shootout, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Nascar, and Monopoly are all good sterns and worth doing. Personally I think it would be good if it's hRC as that will break up the Bally/Williams releases.

Well, I guess there's always the argument of avoiding two pins with a similar theme. I'm getting the feeling thar, since we already have CBW, EBD is not coming. Whodunnit has a bit of a gambling theme going on which is obviously what HRC is. With only nine more tables left this season, is having two similar themes wise? And yes I know that Whodunnit is like a pinball version of Clue but it does showcase some gambling elements.

I agree, I don't think they will push pins with similar themes. That is why I feel certain we will see one of the coaster themed pins in season 3. Based on FB posts it doesn't seem to be Hurricane. So that leaves Comet, Cylclone, and Rollercoaster Tycoon. I think it might be Cyclone as that pin seemed to be in every arcade back in its day.

I would agree that Comet was everywhere, but Roller Coaster Tycoon is also incredibly popular and a way to inject more Stern games into TPA.

IDK if I would be terribly opposed to either one of them, or really any of the coaster themed pins actually.

Cyclone is given the most attention on Facebook by the Farsight moderator to the point they indicated that it would be likely coming and definitely before Hurricane due to the polling results.

Indeed, where is Eight Ball Deluxe, which many assured me in these very forums was a done deal? I can't see that classic table making the cut, under the new one-table scheme.

If that's the case, I guess we could say bye-bye to BK2k as well. But we all know, that ain't the case. Put EBD back on the board. Your welcome.

Saw someone on Facebook complaining that Fish Tales is "a second-rate table that most people have never heard of".

Coming from a second rate pool of people mind you. Consider the source :D

That's why IGN does exactly that. I think it's pretty well the standard among sites that use 1-10 ratings, so 7 is generally considered to be a good score among gamers.

I pretty well consider a 7 to be around my limit to "worth your time" or worth a playthrough, but then again i take game reviews from IGN with a grain of salt anyway, I really like aggregate sites that seem to take the points of view of many without weighing one source more heavily than another.

The thing with IPDB is that it's a user community and not people who review things for a living and should equally be taken with a grain of salt.

All I know is that HRC is a game I've actually played and I really enjoyed playing it...and loved the fact that I could smack drop targets with a straight shot and have enough spin on the ball that it would bounce off and roll back up into another one, seeming to defy gravity.

Is it an essential table? No, not quite but it would be a fun table to have.

If that's the case, I guess we could say bye-bye to BK2k as well. But we all know, that ain't the case. Put EBD back on the board. Your welcome.

I can only hope you are right.

EBD really is something special, where the product is much more than the sum of all it's parts.
It is a simple layout but the shots are varied enough and you are directed to a goal and then a second goal.

It lacks ramps, ok fine, it's got the left loop and just to the right, the multipliers which are extremely dangerous. Hungry outlanes and the 8 ball shot to the right and the bank of drops on the very right that act as your billiard balls and your deluxe targets. It's addictive as all hell.

All of those are valid points. The padding on the 1-10 scale is a "nice" way of saying someone/something is not good while still saying its good. Hey, look your rating is 6.8 so that's good, well above an average rating. But realistically its lower than almost all of the other ratings so its not really good and not really above average at all. I agree that rating things like that is somewhat misleading if not viewed in context..

There are only 2 out of 282 solid state games rated on Pinside that have less than a 6, and both of those are still well above 5. So you could easily just say that ratings are on a scale of 1-5 just by subtracting 5 points off the ratings across the board. So then consider that 6.8/10 as 1.8/5 and that's a more realistic view of how people really think of the game as compared to other games (never played it personally). I just consider that "free" 5 points as being a way of saying that it is pinball so even when its bad its still pretty good.

I think based on the fact the Black Knight is betting on roulette, he is therefore "playing" an element in the next announced game.

Who Dunnit is therefore the elementary choice.
