That's complete rubbish. They're still making, selling, supporting, and promoting the Wii U, and creating software for it. All they've done is announce a release date (March 2017) for the NX, a console/platform that nobody outside of Nintendo knows anything about.

Microsoft is still supporting the XBox 360, and Sony is still supporting the PS3, and it's been more than 2 years since their respective successors have been on the market and established themselves. Why on earth would Nintendo no longer support a console that is still their current-gen offering?!

Eldar is correct... talking of end of support is now mid 2018. Sales, production continue still, now they have over 15 million sold. We are nearing the end, but there is at least 2 years before official end of life, and now e-shop sales are still quite strong. Look at TPA sales :) And it depends on what you mean by "support"... If I am not mistaken, the Wii Mini (which has no wifi) just ended production recently, although online was all but cut off mid 2014.

Sorry Eldar and Steven but I think you are forgetting one thing: unlike those other consoles, the Wii U is the worst selling Nintendo console of all-time. And just where is the software support? Zelda was just delayed into 2017 and is cross-platform, and Star Fox just bombed hard. They have nothing else announced at this time, except that weird Fire Emblem/SMT cross over (which didn't do well in Japan and won't do well here). They've also already stated that the only thing they are bringing to E3 is Zelda, and that is the entire focus of their show - again, a game delayed 2 years running into 2017.

Not only do they have nothing publicly on the docket of any significance, they have an under-selling, under-powered console that is going to be even further behind the curve with PS4k and PS VR coming. With such a small install base and zero third party support, Nintendo clearly needs to move all of its resources towards a fresh start. At this point the Wii U is a braindead patient on life support. Pull the plug.

I have a Wii U and I think it has some excellent software, but it has always been a drip feed and now it seems that is about to run dry.

I might also add that this week saw the release of some hombrew software that just kicked the doors down on the Wii U's security. Piracy is running rampant.

Well, I don't think anyone disagrees with you. My only point is, how do you define "dead"? As I see it, I have games on there now which basically have justified the console. I am not going to buy another console, as I have Zen Pinball, Pinball Arcade, and MK 8. And like everyone, only so much time. They would have to shut it off, and from this more recent article, they will cease production of the until in 2018. People will still be able to buy one until the units sell out, which will be late 2018, most likely. So 2018 is the EARLIEST they could shut Wii U down. Likely, it will be online longer. Maybe not much beyond that but it's not already done for sure and will not be until then at least.

http://www.theverge.com/2016/4/27/11520256/nintendo-wii-u-production-end-2018

So, just because the PS 4 has sold three times as many units, 15 million Wii U s have been sold. That is still alot. I know many people think Nintendo should pull the plug, but the NX just is not anything even real yet. And when it launches (still 10 months from now), who can guarantee it will be a succesful platform? Nobody. So abandoning it would not pay off for anyone, even Nintendo. And really tick off alot of people. Of course Nintendo can't bank on Wii U for their future, but clearly they are not even trying to do that. But...

"Dead", "End of life", and similiar terms are relative. When Nintendo shuts down online functionality, I will purchase another console, either the current offering from Microsoft at the time or an NX. I'll probably end up following as many of my awesome pinball friends from the Wii U and 360 to the platform they adopt, as long as it is a console :) But I figure now that Farsight followed through on the Wii U release and have committed to at least a few updates, I won't need to switch for a long time. Unless the hardware fails LOL... knock on wood.

There is alot of territory between "total success" and "total failure". But, I think people are too absolute in their thinking. Absolute isn't always the case, and there are more areas in between. The success of the Wii fortunately allowed the Wii U to exist, and although there were other consoles that outsold it, most Wii U owners did not hate the system, in fact to the contrary. Fortunately the Wii was so successful that they are still able to creat the NX platform, whatever that will be, despite whether the Wii U can be considered a success or not. It's really gonna be interesting to see what happens with it.

The problem with the Wii U was always value. $300-350 was too much when it released, the fact that it is still $300 in 2016 is mind-boggling. Especially when the Game Cube was $99 two years after launch. The tablet must be very expensive to make, which is ridiculous because of how low-tech it is.

With NX being an ecosystem, that will most likely be backwards compatible, it will be a better purchase than Wii U even if you want Wii U games. What really makes me wonder is if they can release another $300 console that is (very recently) reported to be closer in power to the Xbox One. Where does that leave Wii U prices? I personally think the new system needs to be $250 or less, but if that tablet is still keeping Wii U prices up then what do you do with Wii U stock?

At this point it is commonly assumed you buy a Nintendo console for Nintendo games, because there is no 3rd party support. But now we are reaching the point where there is no real Nintendo software coming either. Not enough to justify $300, especially given that most of the best games are still $60 each.

Both the PS4 and XB1 off so much more value for $300. You're getting tons of games across genres and pricepoints every month, excellent pricedrops and sales, subscription services offering "free" software monthly, and massive install bases with thriving online communities.

Most importantly, you have a cheap backcatalog and several more years of robust software support. You're also getting a much better version of The Pinball Arcade :)

Just to clarify, if Sony lost the P.S. they would be filling for bankruptcy. All Sony is, is a glorified best buy anymore. They aren't the leaders in electronics they once were. What do you supposed Sony is going to do, if the v.r flops? there next system after ps4 most likely won't have a optical drive. Being that games barley are, barley able to read off them now. Blue ray is also dying out to digital already. Nintendo was smart, they knew to do there own thing, and let microsoft and Sony, have there pissing contest on the spec wars. Either way, I just want to play SMB pinball.

And here's where I step in to lay a counterpoint. Until broadband is available to the majority of the country, and by broadband I'm saying a minimum of 25 mbps, disc based games will still be a thing. Downloading a 50 gb game plain sucks, and they're only going to get bigger with the next systems as they'll be 4k. People have been claiming the death of BluRay for a while now too, but for those of us who want all the special features, want 3D, it's the only game in town. And then there's those 4k discs that just started popping up in stores. Why? Because steaming still cannot provide a better picture than disc based content.

It's interesting how the cycle goes, in that screens get bigger and bigger, and then suddenly people want portability and everything goes micro. So streaming on a mobile device, who cares about ultimate picture quality when your eyes simply can't see it?

And Nintendo was smart?? You do realize they are selling off assets because they are hemorrhaging money? Smart would have been to have a system equal to Sony and MS so they wouldn't lose 3rd party support and could at least stay somewhat in the game. Instead they are being lapped repeatedly. We have a Wii U. There are some great games on it. Just went and bought a PS4 2 months back because my son wanted to play some 3rd party games. I had no plans on buying a PS4 for probably another year or so, but that instance pushed me. Nintendo is watching the world pass them by.

Last thing. No, no one else is going to do SMB pinball as FarSight has the rights to any and all Gottlieb machines. Nintendo couldn't even do the machine if they wanted to without licensing the rights from FarSight first. Is there a chance of the table happening? Sure, but it's 99.9% not going to.

Shutyertrap is right. In addition to poor internet infrastructure nation-wide in the U.S., we are seeing more and more ISPs impose datacaps in more and more cities.

Also, VR isn't going to flop. It's just going to be a slow, iterative growth. Sony's console business really is their only profitable sector, but it's currently leading the market by a landslide.

Nintendo is a dinosaur that does not understand the internet age or Western markets. As someone who grew up a Nintendo kid I find it all very tragic to see them keep bumbling everything and refusing to modernize.

Nintendo wouldn't allow the SMB table to be digitized because they have obsessive control over their IPs and some very Japanese business philosophies. When it comes to old licensing deals the past is the past. I mean, have you even seen how incredibly slow they are to release their own legacy library on the Virtual Console? It's just an emulator running roms, all they need to do is QA. Despite their barren software schedule they drip out the VC titles you'd think they would want to put out regularly.

All the same, the table is cute but it would hardly be worth the effort.

it really doesn't matter how much they are worth. The thing is that Nintedo is consoles and games for them. And SONY is doing better on that area. And Nintendo has noting else apart consoles and games. SONY does. Not that it helps since they are loosing money on almost everything else. But what if NX flops like Wii U?

If the nx flops they said they would only be out a 1\2 billion they would still have close to 10 billion left. They have a lot of cash on hand. Verses the other hand Sony, who one flop and they could be done.

Dude, you are playing the fanboy card so thick, it's hard to take you seriously.

Nintendo has all their eggs in one basket. Sony is diversified. They may not make the actual electronics anymore, but they still hold licenses from which they earn massive coin. Remember why Xbox 360 went HD DVD instead of BluRay? Because Sony gets money every time a Blu drive is used. Currently Sony's movie division is suffering, but it's not like that asset is going to disappear anytime soon. All it takes is one hit blockbuster and all is well again. Disney was bottom of the ranks 5 years ago in box office. They currently have 2 movies in theaters that are gonna earn 1 billion, and that's after Star Wars earning that a few months back.

So Sony, Microsoft, they can take hits in the gaming division because other divisions will bolster them. Nintendo doesn't make movies, operating systems, TVs, phones, media players, none of that. On the one hand it's great that all their focus is on games, but on the other they are so woefully out of touch due to hubris, it's sad. Every time I read something about the NX, it's accompanied by it being a make or break moment. Nintendo has survived those before, but it's also possible they become Sega.

Funny you mentioned movies today, since they just announced today they are selling 10% of there stake the the baseball team mariners. To partner with a studio to make a Pixar type division. http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2016/05/16/nintendo-movies-game-maker-considers-theater-release/

I'm not a fanboy of any system, I'm in the stock market and learned to never marry any company. But from today's stand point if I was buying stock in any company it would be Nintendo. They are positioned for huge growth. Microsoft is doing better since they finally learned might as well make games for the computer as well as the Xbox. And they just gave out there last operating system out for free for a year. They also have halo lens coming. Sony have the vr gimmick coming up, but word on the stock market street is the rift is going to be the dominant one in that market. Who is going to develop first party software for it? Its going to burn a lot of cash in there budget. How much does it cost to make a triple A game now days? How much will it take to make a triple A game for Morpheus? I mean how many people will even have a morpheus ? Do you think developer's are going to make third party games for it?

Sounds like a nice idea, until you see who Farsight need to get the licence from: Nintendo.

Do you honestly think for a picosecond Nintendo would allow any of its IP, directly or indirectly, on any platform other than their own? And as a corollary to that: can you see Farsight making a table exclusively for one platform? Take this request as an example: sure, Nintendo may allow Farsight to make SMB, but only for the Wii U. Would Farsight go ahead with this and alienate users on all other platforms? Think about that, then get back to me.

FarSight not alienating users on all other platforms? Too funny! Here are some examples which will take much more than "a picosecond" to gloss through.

Three years of DLC delay for the 360, one DLC drop more than a year ago, and nothing since.
WiiU version of TPA released more than four years after it was first available for the 360 and PS3, yet still advertised as available during all this time.
Playstation versions constantly bugged to hell-especially the lackluster PS4 version.
Xbox One released more than one year after PS4 version, although it appears to be one of the better versions.
iOS delays being reported more frequently.

While some of these many examples may not be completely the fault of FarSight, (Microsoft and Sony breathlessly claimed they were going to work more closely with indie developers), whether voluntarily or imadvertently, FarSight is still "alienating users on other platforms".

What is the proof that the delays are even the majority fault of Farsight? (I'm PC-only but try to keep up with any super major issues on lesserother platforms.)

VR Gimmick? You mean the thing that the entire industry is moving towards and Sony is best-positioned to make mainstream? Your information is bad, the MS Hololense is a gimmick that only exists in PR videos and has years before coming to market. PS VR is an entry-level HMD that works with hardware already availabe in 20 million homes, has 50+ games in development and the ability to play movies (including 3D) and the entire PS4 library in a virtual theater, so support is there. I have a Gear VR, which is no where near as good as PS VR will be, and believe me when I say people will buy it because even the lowly Gear is awesome.

And as far as HMDs already on the market, the HTC Vive is doing far better in reviews and reception than the Oculus Rift, so it is likely to lead the market on the Premium HMD side, with PS VR filling in the mddle and Gear holding the cheap end.

There is a lot of support for PSVR. Games don't need AAA budgets because the novelty of VR is incredible enough. In addition to what Sony has in the pipeline, anything made for the PC headsets could be (and probably will be) ported over - like EVE Gunjack and Valkyrie, for example. I'm prett sure Zen will port their VR software when PSVR hits. Virtual pins sound amazing.

If anyone is interested, here is a sizzle reel of software in development for PS VR:

But the other thing to consider is that VR isn't just about games any more than your PC or tablet is just about games. It's a platform for all kinds of media and experiences, and the social features are more compelling than you would think.

And it looks like a gimmick, it will be hot this Christmas. They will sell out due, to them saying they didn't make enough. For some reason sony has that problem. If vr is the future of gaming and not just a gimmick Nintendo, and Microsoft. Would both be doing it. I just don't see the core gamer wanting to be strapped in for hours on in, day after day. I could be wrong, but I'm still not sold on vr, being the future of gaming. And if it is, Nintendo doesn't have anything to worry about. Nintendo will be fine. Now I think I'll go play some Mario pinball.

well, why not let people have fun with their own recreation of 20+ years old games. It's not that they are still selling NES games or that it hurts sales for those 12 wii u consoles they sold. Mario is all that has left from Nintendo and they try to milk that in every possible way.
They do still sell NES games.

12.8M WiiU consoles were sold, not 12. Granted, it's a far cry from the 101M Wii systems sold.

The Nintendo classic games available on the WiiU were the only reason I've even pondered getting one. They should release a collection of their arcade games, especially since people are still pursuing the world record on Donkey Kong.

But Nintendo won't milk their license by making it available on TPA. Safest speculation IMO.

I know this is going to sound rude but you really don't know what you're talking about. Have you actually tried VR? Like, really sat down with a market unit and some polished software?
