I believe that they all used lead based one back in '87 so a soldering iron of about 20-30 W should be OK. In case that it's lead free than you need iron that can reach higher temperatures. And flux is different and its fumes irritates the nose far more so use some mask. IMO, lead based is easier to work with and looks nicer but at the end it's the same procedure. I don't believe that manual states that but if you look closer at the joints you can see the difference, lead based ones are nicer and shiny whiled lead free are more rough.
