Why do you say the haters are vocal? I think they're extremely quiet, as there is almost never an anti-EM or anti-early-SS post on PAF, and the number of people who don't like them of course greatly outweighs the number that like them, or else TPA would be mostly these machines instead of mostly DMD's. This seems to actually be the silent majority.

Yep, PAF is pretty EM friendly. Facebook is where EM bashing usually takes place. Can't forget that this is a video game, and the vast majority playing it grew up playing mostly DMD era pins. So they are definitely more popular and more requested. After that there is a pretty large group of early SS pin lovers, followed by an even smaller group of EM junkies.

What I find interesting is that most people that love EMs also enjoy early SS and the DMD era pins. But it doesn't seem to as often go the other direction. There seems to be a large portion of DMD fans that don't won't to even hear about an EM pin being discussed. Or at least this is often the impression I get.

This is where I see the "vocal haters" as well. PAF is a lot more friendly of a place period. :)

In a way I don't find it surprising (to some degree). Probably the pins you first encounter in your teens / twenties, and their motif / style, are in general what you most want to see. There's probably more computer gamers out there in their late 30s to 40s (meaning they were around for the early 1990s pinball wave) than their are gamers who were teens in the EM era (and probably are in their 60s now).

"Back in my day" I never saw *any* EM in arcades. I've only played one IRL EM, a Spirit of 76 a family member had. The only sort-of early SS games I saw *ever* in arcades around here were one Space Shuttle and one Eight Ball Deluxe.

Personally I appreciate the EMs despite growing up in the DMD era, but reading Facebook I feel like I'm not with the majority of pinball players from my era. Could be wrong but that's my impression.

Got it. Thanks, you and Kolchak, I never read the facebook page unless I'm hunting for news on Stern Pinball Arcade.

FWIW, I'm mid-40's, and first started playing pinball very regularly in high school, machines from Pin*Bot to Earthshaker, mostly Williams but some Bally and Gottlieb as well, and even Lazer War. But my heart is mostly with WMS DMD's from T2 until the end. I never saw any EM's in the places I played, until a couple of hipster college bars I frequented (one had Swinger, I think), and then I made friends with a local operator who let me play the dozens of glorious EM's like Wizard in his shop, and then the rabbit hole opens.

I have strong preferences for WMS and Williams, and think other manufacturers/eras are inferior, but enjoy something from every manu/era. I do think the WMS/Williams machines are flat-out better than EM's, but as that is the heart of TPA they are very well represented, and now EM's are under-represented. I would've been unhappy to see more than one or two EM's back in Season 1 or 2, but now I want two per season.

In general I think TPA is making pretty much perfect choices for tables, that are almost exactly along my preferences, given licensing difficulties.

Pretty much what he said applies to me. Same age bracket, same machines to cut my teeth on. I worked in an arcade in '91, saw a bunch of tables come through. I never liked the build quality of Data East machines, and the Gottliebs of those years just looked like pale imitations. I had no clue Gottlieb was the king of EMs, nor did I really understand what an EM even was. Back then if it didn't have ramps or multiball, I didn't wanna play it.

I also completely agree with the sentiment that FarSight should represent a wider swath of tables now. Personally I'd be happy keeping it WMS but just odd play field layouts, but I'm down with the EM packs too.

Rescue 911 gets a 4 out of me. I'm sorry, but while I love the life-saving theme, this machine just seems even more incomplete than Cactus Canyon.

But Cactus Canyon had the excuse of being rushed out the door. Rescue 911 just seems barren...there are even four white spot targets on the right side that do NOTHING but give 3,000 points a hit (which may as well be zero in this game).

There's a rumor that those four spot targets were intended to spell out KIRK for a game mode or something, but they had to shelf that idea once Gottlieb couldn't get William Shatner's likeness (he hosted the TV show).

The game would've gotten a 3, but "Extra BAWL" made me laugh pretty hard, so I gave it a mercy point.

Last Action Hero...wow, I am SO glad they were able to get the rights to this thing! Especially because I LOVE the movie it's based on...and not in a make-fun-of-it way, I mean I really love the movie. I even got it on Blu-Ray once I realized this was the next table.

What they did with the CRANE drop targets was nothing short of brilliant--having them all reset upon hitting the switch behind a lowered target (the "Danger Bar") is a tremendously smart move that rewards shot accuracy and punishes random flailing of the flippers. Well done, Kaminkow, Borg and team.

This is also the first game I've ever played to have the fabled Smart Missile, which awards every flashing target on the table at the time it's pressed, but not only can it ONLY be used ONCE per game (not once per ball, once per GAME), but there is NO way to get another. It forces you to use it when the time is just right.

Another thing about the Smart Missile that makes it even better? Once the ball hits an outlane switch, it deactivates the Smart Missile, so you can't just slam the button as you're draining. This simple design decision FORCES the player to use it WHILE the ball is in play, once more forcing you to think strategically.

Data East gets a lot of flack for their very average designs of most of their machines, but wow, they really hit the long ball here...but there are two things with this table that keep it from getting over the fence for a homer.

One, the repetitive, seemingly-random callouts. I can't make rhyme or reason of why many of them occur. Frankenstein had the same problem. This is something we take for granted in masterpieces like Addams Family, Twilight Zone, and Medieval Madness--the callouts always have something to do with whatever switch is hit. In LAH and MSF, it just seems random most of the time.

Though there's one callout I do love--draining by outlane sometimes makes Benedict announce "I just SHOT somebody, and I did it on PURPOSE!" A great line from a great scene in the movie--especially given what actor Charles Dance does in the very last instant of this video. (Yes, the same actor from Game of Thrones, if you watch that show.)

Second...what the heck, Farsight? You turned off the funny match sequence! Normally, I wouldn't mind, since such things are pointless on a free-play table anyway, but this one actually makes you laugh.

Yeah, you can turn it back on in the coin-door menu if you have the Pro version (it's still in the ROM), but as of this writing, the buttons are highly UNresponsive in that menu. Argh. Took me almost 20 minutes to get to the setting. I had the same problem with Frankenstein, coincidentally enough.

First, here's the scene it's taken from--part of this is used when lighting and awarding the extra ball, too.
(Won't let me embed more than one video.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Z9Ismh1elM

And here's the match on the real machine. I wonder why Farsight made them skip over this here, of all tables. Was it due to the trailer guy's voice?
https://youtu.be/W7pl3zCsK30?t=12m25s

Anyway, even with those two gripes (oh, and AC/DC's "Big Guns" is barely recognizable, but that's DE's fault, not Farsight's), I give this game an 8. Thanks, Farsight.

Man, that match sequence is awesome. This is a real a shame, I'd like to hear the reason why they decided to skip it.

Anyways, now I can safely say this is the best DE ever made. The modes are fun and varied, and there's plenty of cool multiballs, including a 6-ball one. Jurassic Park was good, but this has Schwarzenegger in it, so it automatically makes it better. I give it a 9.

I gave one a 10 -- High Speed. Funny that my favorite tables are in the 30s and 40s. I don't mind MM being #1 -- it's a great table. And, I know some people really dig Pat Lawlor's toy piles (TAF, TZ). Certain ones the appeal is just lost on me (White Water, for instance). Something for everybody, I suppose.

I didn't give any 10s, and agree that my rankings pretty much reflect my opinion of the real table, then with a bit taken off if the TPA version is still all buggy. Like CV for example.

My vote for TX musta been the tenth so it's popped up now, mid table.

Last month's new table, Indianapolis 500, is currently at #8 in the list! But in a dramatic development, Red & Ted's Road Show, which was in 10th place and would have been bumped out of the top 10 by Indianapolis 500's arrival, retains its place by clinging to a surprise tie with the previous number 9, White Water!
