Chris, I did try it last year at a Pinball Show in Orlando Florida, I actually did pretty good on it. But I found myself getting bored of it right away, then when my third ball came I just left it and went to play the new Star Trek. But if it's their on November 21 thru 23, which the show is now called Freeplay Florida I will give it another shot. Another thing is the sound wasn't very loud and all the other machines drained it, so I might like it better when it comes to TPA.

Honestly, the way you talk about it makes it seem like you were never really interested in it to begin with and were only playing it because you felt like you had to.

You really need to get a good, focused game going. Don't think about the latest Stern, think about the game you're actually playing.

Like SYT said, EBD is an excellent tournament game and is frequently used in PAPA tournaments because of its very skill-based ruleset and design.

EBD is one of those tables you can't see the appeal of until you've played it. Once played, it's hard to quit. It is the epitome of "if I could JUST hit that one target, I'd be happy". Next ball you get it, only to have a different target dogging you. That's its secret too. It looks so simplistic, yet is ridiculously challenging. It also happens to be a great tournament table.

This describes Big Shot perfectly as well. Pool is about precision shooting and naturally translates to pinball games that demand the same thing. When you miss in these games, you know it's your fault and you know you'll do better next time (no you won't, of course, but you know it anyway.)

The fact that it's the second best selling table of all time should get it into TPA alone.

You're thinking of the original Eight Ball which sold over 20,000 units. Eight Ball Deluxe is more like 11,000.

You're totally right.
I made the same mystake.
Eight Ball Deluxe is even less than 11.000.
It's more like 8.000.

My problem with Big Shot though is there's no variety to the shots and it is incredibly unforgiving. I find it frustrating, not fun. I feel I'm more at the mercy of a good bounce than my own skill. EBD tips the scale the other direction, which is why I find it addicting.

BS is actually one of the rare few EMs that I truly enjoy and continue to play over and over.

I'll never understand the appeal of EBD? I've watched every video out there of the table, and I find myself falling asleep. Yes, I know, "Just wait until you play it!", but I'm pretty sure once I play it, I'll still feel the same way. It just looks so damn boring.

(At least with BS, you've got a challenge, and the table is not very forgiving. As mad as it makes me sometimes, I still have fun, because I end up being determined to kick it's ass! lol)

I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say that this table will be the next "Most overrated table" next to "High Speed". For all the hype THAT table got, it was incredibly dull. Then again, people have said "It's much better to play in person!", so I'm gonna guess the same will be said for EBD?

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I was worried I was the only person that thought the table was boring as hell. Now I don't feel so bad. I figured I'd get tarred and feathered for saying so!! Whew.

Actually, there's quite a few of us around here that share this opinion.

I admit, my feelings on EBD come exclusively from playing the real thing. I also don't think you should ever believe the hype over whatever table is coming out. Most of it comes from nostalgia, and if you don't have that going for you, then the table lives and dies by its own strengths. It's why I'll never be pumped for a Data East table, because most of my memories playing them are bad! It's why the tables I get most excited about are Williams System 11, because that's what was out during my prime arcade days.

I'll say this about High Speed. While I'd place plenty of tables in front of it on any list, I do think it is pure pinball. It's not about toys or gimmicks, just speed and accuracy. And it is a fantastic machine IRL.

For speed and accuracy, I'll stick with "F-14 Tomcat". It's one of my favorite tables from my childhood.

That's interesting, since you're not a High Speed fan. I remember playing High Speed and F-14 Tomcat side by side numerous times. It's when I first noticed that pinball was a whole different game now.

High Speed, F-14 Tomcat, and pretty much that whole raft of mid-80's-to-early-90's Williams tables were where I really cut my teeth on pinball. I loved playing early EM's when I was a little kid, but in my prime arcade days, those mid-80's-to-early-90's Williams tables all seemed head and shoulders above everything else. I'd already loved High Speed, and F-14 Tomcat just seemed to go right along with it. Same manufacturer, same designer, same great feel. Yes, I was ecstatic about High Speed coming to The Pinball Arcade, F-14 Tomcat is arguably my next most wanted.

High Speed has the same problem as all the early solid state tables in TPA: the flippers are too strong.

High Speed is thrilling in real life since only a perfect shot should make it up the ramp to start that multiball and win that jackpot. You should get a lot of close calls where you know it was your fault to tune in your shot better next time. High Speed in TPA is severely neutered when any old sloppy bounce just flies up the ramp for you. There's no way in hell any shot from the *lower* flippers should get up that ramp as TPA allows to happen.

High Speed was also a lot more exciting historically when the whole idea of a multiball-jackpot sequence was a brand new thrill in pinball. It's not so exciting in TPA when you've already been playing tables that hand out "jackpots" like fun size Snickers.

Not to mention the lights on top.

I don't know. I've played recently two different collector's High Speed tables, and those flippers were plenty strong. No different from the Earthshaker or Funhouse that were adjacent.
